Marvel's House Of Stupid Ideas (Spoilers)

Postby draco x » Fri Apr 27, 2012 5:26 pm

If anyone has been following the recent Battle Scars mini with that new character Marcus Johnson, it was revealed that he was the bastard child of Nick Fury. While I had no problem with that reveal as it was kind of predictable, the ending of the mini-series this week was another thing:
First off, Nick Fury is stripped of his infinity formula, making way for his son to take over in the most idiotic reveal ever: Apparently, Marcus loses his eye like his father did and then shaves his hair off and then becomes the new head of SHIELD under his true name Nick Fury Jr, resembling the Ultimate version of Nick Fury. Also, it is revealed that his best friend Cheese's real name is Phil Coulson( How ironic is that happening) and Marcus ( I mean Nick Jr) dons that crappy costume Steve Rogers wore in the Heroic Age.
Why is all of this stupid? Well let's see, why would Marcus take the name of his absentee father who was never present in his life up till now? Couldn't they have just left him as Marcus Johnson and have him try to be his own character instead of using a more established character's name? Also using the image of the Ultimate incarnation just reeks of cheap gimmickry given the fact that the movie is coming out this summer. Another gripe I have is why would SHIELD just put Marcus( I mean Nick Jr) in charge so quickly given the fact he has no SHIELD experience? Again if they had made him a SHIELD agent I could be ok with that but this is dumb all over. I liked the mini for the most part but this ending ruined it and I hate how Nick Fury Sr. is seemingly tossed out to pastures for a new guy in this manner. I personally hope that Nick Fury Sr. gets another infinite formula to put him back in action and that his son goes back to being Marcus Johnson with hair and two eyes.[blackout]

What do you expect? Comics are done creatively, and now exist to become films later on. Makes sense Marvel would do this.

Kind of disagree here as I think they should just let Marcus be his own character and not turn him into another version of Ultimate Fury. I didn't mind the Phil Coulson intro but the other part I mentioned was just silly. It felt like a quick cash-grab to me seeing as how the movie is right around the corner.

I agree it's bad.

I disagree it's unexpected. It's par for the course.

Anyone else catch Marvel trolling the BC forums making fun of readers who thought this was stupid? They hate you, but know you will keep buying their product. They practically even came right out and said it.

Battle Scars was actually a good mini, though.

I agree the concept is stupid, and the reasons for it are retarded and unnecessary.. But it was a fun book, and Nick Fury Jr. and Phil Coulson are good characters and additions to the MU.

White Fury works best as a behind the scenes manipulator anyway. They can use Black Fury in a similar role as Steve Rogers when he was using that costume before becoming Cap again.. Have him be the public face of SHIELD, and the big mission guy.

I find Marcus Johnson interesting not the Ultimate reject in that hand-me-down costume that Steve Rogers once wore and obviously forgot about.

Not I. All I did was flip through the 2 issues Books A Million had.

Have not read the new one, nor do I feel the need to.

if you found him interesting a month ago, you still should now.

A name change and wearing a different outfit shouldn't change that. You can't be that fickle.

Also.. How is everyone surprised by this? If you were reading the book, it should've been pretty obvious after a couple issues.

Not if the change involves a corny resemblance to Samuel L Jackson and losing his eye like his dad did and a bad costume better left forgotten. I mean what's wrong with keeping Johnson as how he was already and keeping Nick Fury Sr around and not pushing him into the background? Both Nick Sr. and Marcus were fine the way they were from where I stand.
