Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes 2.05: To Steal an Ant-Man

Postby LOLtron » Mon Apr 30, 2012 1:04 pm

Hank Pym has a problem. Someone has stolen his Ant-Man costume and thus has access to Pym-Particles. Who can he turn too? HEROES FOR HIRE!

Review:

Still reeling from Ultron's attempt to wipe out humanity and the philosophical differences with the other Avengers, Hank Pym has decided to stop being Ant-Man. Unfortunately for him, someone already decided to steal his costume take his place as Ant-Man already. What's a fallen hero to do? Hire Iron Fist and Luke Cage to handle it!

Okay, first off I'm just going to talk about the one thing that I didn't like about this episode. The fact Hank Pym does pretty much only one thing and be all broody throughout the episode. Yeah, I can kind of guess why he's acting this way, but geez I thought this episode would focus more on him. Not to have the heroes he hires utterly steal the episode away from him (though given the two heroes involved it wasn't such a bad thing). I guess this is Hank's ongoing subplot throughout this season.

I get that this is his thing to keep him away so the Avengers can get their butt kicked more, but I figured we would get more insight into him with this episode. Nope, just a key role in the beginning and end that's it. I kind of wish we got more moments with him and Janet near the end, but to delay it kind of made Hank seem even more a jerk, though I get the dude is on the verge of a mental breakdown. Though kudos to Wally Wingert for the very subdued and withdrawn performance. You could tell via the tone of his voice that Hank has gone bye-bye.

Again, this episode was hijacked by the Heroes for Hire aka Power Man and Iron Fist. This wasn't a bad thing per say, due to the fact the two characters where just so fantastic. The chemistry between the two and the banter they spewed off the other makes me realize why these characters have such a devoted fan base. It was just awesome beyond words to see both characters just show how bad-ass they were. The added bonus was seeing a ton of their rogues gallery as the villain's henchmen.

As for the new Ant-Man Scott Lang, he came off extremely sympathetic and also told a nice origin for him on how he became this new Ant-Man. It wasn't by choice, but the man certainly fit the role of a hero well. Add the fun cameo of his daughter Cassie, and it was a nice rounded appearance.

To think given the title, you'd feel somewhat cheated not getting much on the Hank Pym front save for some teases of what's bugging him here and there. But really, the heroes who showed up in the episode were very nice. Of all the episodes so far this season, this felt like filler, but an extremely fun one. We got some great new characters within this universe to play off the Avengers in the future and Hank Pym didn't need to wear his costume to own super-villains. All he needed was the greatest weapon of all, SCIENCE.

This didn't seem so much like Avengers, but of it's umbrella; Marvel Universe. And I loved that. Love when they put in the lesser-known characters. The Luke Cage (don't call him Power Man) and Iron Fist characters were very fun to watch and it would be nice to see the New Avengers start to form. Seeing the mook villains were great, and so were some of the smaller fanboy nods. I thought the yellow jacket was going to break through a window to inspire Hank to put fear into the superstitious and cowardly lot.

I thought he was back after the Asgard episodes. :smt102 I liked the tease of Hank having the yellowjacket.

It wasn’t an Avengers episode but it doesn’t matter cause the Heroes for Hire were awesome! I thought it was weird Hank narrating what happened and I marked out when Danny and Luke showed up (even though I knew they were showing up this season). Their interactions were so great.

The stuff with Scott's experience with shrinking was really cool too.

I think it’d be cool if Ant Man joined the Heroes and the three of them join the Avengers together.

Seeing Big Ben on my tv cracked me up. I never in a million years would I have thought they’d put him in anything.

I always thought that YellowJacket was cooler than Ant-Man. Kind of a creepy cool outfit

Felt like a filler episode. But it was fun seeing the real Luke Cage and Iron Fist and not the pre-pube versions from Ultimate Spider-Man and the Yellow Jacket nod wasn't cool at all. I want Yellow Jacket dammit!! :(

I loved that the gang was all old Heroes for Hire villains. As someone who loves those old comics that was fun to see.
