I could go on if you want. :D

-Hunger Games was better. People just excuse Battle Royale because of the uber violence and because it's Japanese, so it's allowed to be quirky and shit. It wasn't a great movie outside of the violence and has huge gaps in the narrative.

-Ghost Protocol did suck. Not only was it basically the same as 3, it has Ethan Hunt getting the shit kicked out of him by a 60 year old physicist. And how does he beat the physicist? He doesn't. The guy commits suicide. :-D

-I liked the Cap movie, but the second half isn't nearly as good as the first. I bet you a lot of people would agree here. IGN for one. The first half is simply brilliant. The second half is ok and feels rushed.

-Rise of the PLanet of the Apes. Sorry if I didn't love Deep Blue Ape. The concept is tired and the special effects weren't all that. Cesar looks like a CGI ape and I don't get what the fanwank was about.

-Constantine is a great comic book movie. People were simply set to hate it before it ever came out. It's look, use of CGI, story, plot and so on were all very well done. On counterpoint here is the Avengers. People like you are set to love it before you've ever seen it and will defend it to the death.

How good are the special effects

Absolutely stunning. Very impressed with them throughout

Are there any references to any classic Avengers?
To be honest, I was surprised at how little Easter Eggs there were in this. I suppose a lot of the "classic" Avengers are tied up in other properties. Characters like Daredevil,Spider-man and Sentry are probably all owned by other companies, so you don't get much reference to them

Who has the best part?
Hulk definitely steals the latter part of the movie, but Iron Man, Cap and Thor all have their great moments. Some of the dialogue is hilarious. It's awesome seeing big fights with these larger than life characters, and they all got a chance to shine, I was very impressed with the films handling of Cap, he comes across as a hero.

I think Hawkeye and Black Widow had a bit of dialogue as well.

Is Maria Hill in it much?!?!?!?
Ah of course the biggie, the fan outrage over the lack of Maria Hill in the trailers are not justified IMO. A good case can be made for her being on screen more than Hawkeye (especially till the final quarter of the film). She's pretty kick ass. The Great one would be proud.

Much space stuff?
Thankfully not much at all.

The movie does answer the question of why Cap uses a shield instead of a gun. :-D The guy shoots with the aim of a Stormtrooper.

I liked Constantine. It is, however, nowhere near one of the best comic book movies ever. And it had major points off for having very little to do with, you know.. Constantine/Hellblazer. I think that's kind of an important aspect of being a comic book movie.

*sigh*

Sure, but you'll excuse the gigantic departures XMen, Xmen 2, Xmen: First Class, Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and so on take from the original material. It's typical fanwank. People wanted to hate COnstantine because of Keanu and they were determined to do it before they ever saw the movie.

Just like many were intent to love the Dark Knight because they love Nolan. The departures that Nolan has taken would be reviled by fans in other instances.

The difference is.. you can still tell all of those are based on the property.

Constantine's John Constantine shares very few characteristics with Hellblazer's John Constantine.

It's like they just took the basic concept and wrote their own guy into it, and slapped the John Constantine name on him.

Name aside, it could just as easily be a Sandman Slim adaptation or something. The urban fantasy genre is full of these types of characters, all of whom share just about as much with the movie's character as he did with the source material.

Judged on it's own merits it's a good movie. Like I said, I liked it. Keanu or no Keanu. I have no irrational hatred of Keanu Reeves. I love the Matrix movies, even the ones everyone seems to hate.

The character aspect bugs me, but it's not the deciding factor for my initial point about best comic book movies of all time or anything. The movie, on it's own, while good, would not be in my top 10. Whether they stayed true to the character or not wouldn't change that, ultimately.

So I liked a good movie.

Your 90% comment isn't getting a whole lot of credibility at this point.:P

Anyhoo, I hope you love the Avengers, and go see it like 5 times in the theaters. More Whedon on big projects and more Avengers movies is something I would like to see.

How are Spider-Man, Daredevil and the Sentry "classic" Avengers.

Also, having Salwen write a review for a movie on the front page is just as bad for the site as having a Brony write a review.

Reading this review and that some feels that this was glorified fan service and a mere mediocre at best flick is just hogwash. This was close to a perfect movie as you can get, if not perfect.

My fiancee us not a comic fan, and never will be and she loved it. She is already talking bout seeing it again. I loved everything bout this. Action. Character moments. CGI. Hell, I loved Hawkeye in this.

Yes, you read that right.

Now I understand why Punchy was so annoyed at me when I called Alan Moore overrated. Either you are saying this just to be different and get attention, or you truly have shitty taste in all that is good. Knowing the author, I say its a bit if both.

Like I argued with (i think) Salwen, there was clear blatant fanservice in there but it was definitely non-intrusive as to not derail the movie. When I saw "Project Pegasus" at the start I knew there'd be a lot of easter eggs for me to spot :)

Yes, there were Easter Eggs but That was just added bonus. My fiancée wouldn't know any of that and she was most vocal enjoyment then me.

I went with two non-comic readers and we all loved the hell out of this movie. Best comic movie I can think of and possibly the best action movie I've seen in years. Considering how many elements had to be introduced and intertwined into a cohesive story, this movie is simply amazing to have not only pulled it off but look great while doing it. Elements from every previous movie dovetail nicely into this movie. Whedon is at the top of his game (I'm happy that there are very few noticeable "Whedonisms" in the film).

We had a good time and I wasn't the only one who rated it so highly. Hell, I wasn't even the most vocal about how awesome it was.

So: very successful movie. Deservedly so. Bravo.

This movie was perfect, absolutely freaking amazing.

I went with five other people who don't read comics, they all loved it, though they felt like it moved a tad slow in the beginning. But by the end they couldn't stop talking about how great it was and how much they loved the Hulk.

And FTR

Rise of the Planet of the apes was great
MI IV was great
Constantine wasn't great

I'm happy you liked Deep Blue Ape. To me, it's a tired concept that's been done to death.
I'm also glad you liked MI 3.5 with an Ethan Hunt that is now incapable of beating up 60 year old physicists. Simon Pegg always rules, but that was about it. It was mindless jumping out of a window shit again.
Constantine was a fine movie, and the only thing I ever hear fans REALLY bitch about was that it wasn't fanservice for them. Get over that it wasn't the Constantine you know and just watch it as a film. On those merits, it's quite fun.
