Dany was awesome in book 1. You only have to compare her character at the start of the book with her character at the end to see how much growth she goes through. That's one Hell of a character arc there.
So, it would be difficult to top that in later books. There is some cool stuff coming up, though. One of the big themes is that doing the right thing often makes everything ten times worse and that's a lesson that she has to learn. For example, she's always freeing slaves and shit but then it's like, 'what do we do with all these slaves?' So she eventually has to put some of her own plans on the backburner to take responsibility for her (increasingly numerous) people.
As such,
she's not even the first (modern) Targaryen character to invade Westeros! But before that you get a lot of awesome stuff with Dany conquering significant portions of the East. Not in book 2, though.
She seems to be a really divisive character, people either love her or hate her. Personally, I've been a fan from the beginning but Emilia Clarke's performance really brought the character to life for me and she's one of my favourites now.
