Like it or not, Avatar was unbelievably successful both critically and financially. Cameron would be a fool not to follow up on that, and he really seems to enjoy creating the films from a technical perspective (CGI, fleshing out the biology of the alien world, etc.).
It really wasn't a bad film. My big problem with it was that the plot was completely by the numbers, the characters were entirely one-dimensional, and the emotional moments felt completely contrived. Of course, the same criticisms could be leveled at almost any big action/adventure movie; Cameron just seems to get an extra dollop of hate from some fans for some reason (if it's because of Titanic, I totally agree with the residual hate though).
