James Cameron will only make 'Avatar' movies from now on

The success of James Cameron’s Avatar was inspiring: an indication that it is possible to launch a new saga in reboot-happy Hollywood. Now it looks like the Avatar saga is pretty much all James Cameron will be working on for, well, the rest of his filmmaking life. In an interview with the New York Times, Cameron explains that he has shut down the development arm of his production company and is no longer working on any new projects:

“I’m in the Avatar business. Period. That’s it. I’m making Avatar 2, Avatar 3, maybe Avatar 4"

Does he mean directing or producing too? Wasn't he developing an HP Lovecraft thing with Del Toro? I really wanted to see that.

Wow, can't wait until this one blows up.in his face. The thought of that many new Avatar movies makes me want to punch babies. Ish.

I'll find the article but del Toro said the lovecraft movie would be canceled soon since it was was too similar to promethus. It was in comingsoon.net

Like it or not, Avatar was unbelievably successful both critically and financially. Cameron would be a fool not to follow up on that, and he really seems to enjoy creating the films from a technical perspective (CGI, fleshing out the biology of the alien world, etc.).

It really wasn't a bad film. My big problem with it was that the plot was completely by the numbers, the characters were entirely one-dimensional, and the emotional moments felt completely contrived. Of course, the same criticisms could be leveled at almost any big action/adventure movie; Cameron just seems to get an extra dollop of hate from some fans for some reason (if it's because of Titanic, I totally agree with the residual hate though).
