I'm thinking of characters that are clear knock offs of an already established character, or a gimmicky character which reflects what might be popular at the time. This can be a good or bad character.

Good- Silver Surfer

He's a surfer, with the last name Radd. Maybe people were less cynical or more open to goofiness at the time. We have the luxury of knowing several excellent stories concerning the character, many of us grew up reading his solo series. We know this is a good character, but taken on name and appearance alone, I wouldn't have expected this character to endure as long as it has.

Bad- Lobo

This main man is created to be an intergalactic biker and bounty hunter and built with every stereotype possible. I wouldn't have imagined this character surviving past a single arc of whatever comic he appeared in, but somehow he got really popular and still exists today.

What do you think? Agree? Disagree? Any other characters who you wouldn't have expected to endure which have?

Disagree on Lobo. I've read good stories with him. It really depends on the writer.

Alan Moore proved this with the entire Liefeld-verse.

He, like Silver Surfer, was a bad idea that shouldn't have survived but did and eventually prospered.

Another one would be Connor Kent/Superboy. A leather jacketed, sunglasses wearing Superman pastiche should not have been long for this world.

Lobo was really only designed to be a one/two shot villain in Omega Men.

I blame society.

My only experience with Lobo is the animated version, I hate him so much.

I also saw him in that Marvel vs. DC crossover event, but that was awful to begin wtih.

I'd agree with Deadpool, and even Cable. Other writers have done a lot more with them than Liefeld ever did.

Shatterstar still sucks, even under David.

I like David's Shatterstar ... of course, I have purposefully avoided 99% of Shatterstar's previous appearances in comics.
