There was a Darkwing duck episode like that where Darkwing was brought to a planet populated entirely by superheroes and IIRC as a consequence he was constantly being "rescued" from even the most mundane situations because without someone to rescue the superheroes had nothing else to do.

Good- Silver Surfer

He's a surfer, with the last name Radd. Maybe people were less cynical or more open to goofiness at the time. We have the luxury of knowing several excellent stories concerning the character, many of us grew up reading his solo series. We know this is a good character, but taken on name and appearance alone, I wouldn't have expected this character to endure as long as it has.

Bad- Lobo

This main man is created to be an intergalactic biker and bounty hunter and built with every stereotype possible. I wouldn't have imagined this character surviving past a single arc of whatever comic he appeared in, but somehow he got really popular and still exists today.

What do you think? Agree? Disagree? Any other characters who you wouldn't have expected to endure which have?

I think the use of "Rad" as surfer slang was more of an '80's thing, which means Silver Surfer would predate it about 15-20 years.

A fat guy who manipulates chance? How did someone think that was a good idea for a character? Luck manipulation powers are lame no matter how you slice it, and the explanation for his abilities ("Luck glands?" Really?) is idiotic even for the Silver Age. He's also responsible for the Royal Flush Gang, perhaps the worst gaming based fictional criminal enterprise of all time.

And yet, for some reason, people keep trotting him out every few years.

I was pointing out that the slang term "rad" came after the Surfer.

The correct spelling for "rad" in that use of the term is R-A-D. Not R-A-D-D.

If I was talking about the Silver Surfer, I would have spelled it R-A-D-D, but I wasn't. I was talking about the slang term.
