Comics are fun.

The Review Group should be fun too.

Bagge, Powell and Lapham all in the span of 4 weeks? We should have done this selection by poll thing sooner!

DAN THE UNHARMABLE #1
Writer: David Lapham
Art: Rafael Ortiz
Eisner Award winning writer David Lapham delivers a fresh punch to the face with his new ongoing series about crime, family, and being a lazy, yet invulnerable, private detective. Dan is something of a hired man. Whatever one needs doing, be it detective work, muscle work, blackmail work, or bedroom work - Dan's your man. Dan’s not afraid of anything because Dan’s totally unharmable. You can beat him with sticks, stick him in the oven, throw him off a bridge, or shoot him in his noggin its all the same to Dan. He's never met an insult that bothered him or a person he cared about—at least for more than a night. Dan prefers not to be shackled down by worldly goods. He works for just enough dough to keep him in cigs and beer for a night or two, maybe a room, and he’s content. Dan's bohemian paradise is all about to change, however. You see, back before Dan was so unharmable he left a few loose ends. Now those loose ends are growing up and their mother's been murdered, which not only means that Dan has to solve his most personal case yet, he's now legally responsible for four human beings who are anything but unharmable.... Dan the Unharmable is a new ongoing series by noir legend, David Lapham featuring art by Rafael Ortiz.

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it under $3.99.

Naturally, this new system is new and it may be necessary to make changes as we go.

I guess Stephen Day is out this week.

I like the name of the magazine he's reading on the cover.

What's up ya'll. Gotta say I'm pretty jacked about this new Lapham book. Here's hoping it's awesome.

And this review crew thing is a great idea. Thank you to whoever came up with it/monitors it.

A bit about me. I'm 30 and only started reading comics seriously about 6 years ago. But when I go into them I hit them hard and have been reading steadily ever since. I'm constantly amazed at the amount of variety there is in comics. I was on the Marvel train for a couple years when Civil War first came out and I was one of those fools that got sucked in to buying a lot of crossovers before realizing they were pure garbage. Essential learning experience. I've come a long way and have been really into older stuff/more obscure stuff from Fantagraphics, Picture Box, Drawn & Quarterly etc. I've got a few issues of Kramer's Ergot and that stuff is so incredibly different and so great. I've since reduced the amount of hero books in my pull this a great deal.

Most influential books for me are probably early-ish Vertigo stuff like Preacher and Sandman as well as DKR and Watchmen. Miller and Bendis' Daredevil runs were the first long hero runs I read that I thought were pure awesome. Pretty typical stuff really but those were the ones that plunged me so deep into comics that I knew I'd never want to resurface.

Anyhow, there's much more to say but wanted to give you a little bit of background. I look forward to writing and reading reviews here because it will further expand my critical eye for comics as well as encourage me to try some books I would have otherwise overlooked.

Nope, Avatar's official site has a link to a place where I can buy it online, so I'll be doing up a review eventually. It's going to be a busy weekend this week, so it may be early next week though.

And this review crew thing is a great idea. Thank you to whoever came up with it/monitors it.

I'm going to hit a couple of shops tomorrow to see if I can get this without ordering online since Avatar seems to be stuck in 2009. :smt011

Welcome! :D

And if you have not done so already, read John Byrne's legendary FF run. I just reread the Trail of Reed Richards this morning--the first time in too many years--and was blown away by both the art and the story. It actually took me a long time to read this single issue. And I loved every minute of it.

Probably my favorite run of the '80s.

I don't like the sound of that.

Perhaps I'll just skip this week then.

re: 2009

I was alluding to Avatar not having a digital method of distribution in place. I've never used the online shop Avatar links for purchases if that's what you're worried about.
