Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes 2.07: Who Do You Trust?

Nick Fury returns and declares that someone amongst the Avengers is a Skrull double agent!

Review:

Having disappeared since the midway point of Season One, Nick Fury returns with a vengeance. His mission is clear, to expose the Skrull agents that are on Earth. To that end he recruits Quake, Black Widow and Mockingbird to assist him in telling S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers one simple message: WHO DO YOU TRUST?

trust1

So we get the critical Skrull episode and surprisingly it didn't go as I thought it would. I thought this was going to be the episode where Captain America gets revealed as a Skrull agent. Instead, things went down a path I didn't even expect it to go. This episode clearly established the paranoia that anyone could be a Skrull and there's no way to tell unless you're Dr. Doom. Now the cat is somewhat out of the bag with the Avengers knowing that someone on the team is a Skrull. The reactions everyone has are VERY intriguing.

It wasn't surprising at all to see Wasp try and be the moral anchor again as she pretty much is trying to be the glue holding this team together. BUT... given what evidence that is presented to Iron Man from Fury, how can't you suspect that anyone could be a Skrull? Now we the viewers already know WHO that double agent is. To see this "Captain America" just innocently prove he wasn't a Skrull was quite chilling. Yeah, we've had evidence throughout this season for characters to question him, but with this episode you can't help but be awed at just how good a double agent he is. He just stands there as the team bickers amongst themselves and after it finished he just provides the moral support to keep the team afloat.

trust3

The other standouts of the episodes for me were four characters: Iron Man, Hawkeye, Black Panther, and Ms. Marvel. For the latter of the four, this is her welcome party and geez does this revelation come at a horrible time for her. Given she's an agent of S.W.O.R.D. and an Avenger, her job isn't the easiest. So to see one job as an Avenger almost appear done before it didn't even start was amazing.

For Hawkeye, it was being the top suspect of being the Skrull double agent. It does make sense. Given how he acted throughout the latter half of Season One, his behavior would have to be suspected. Not to mention he would be the perfect double agent. He'd have access to everyone. Then there's the fact he's so darn brazen to resist being called a Skrull that it wouldn't help his cause even more. Still, it was awesome to see of all the Avengers that the only one to really defend him is Hulk. I really hope of all the heroes involved that it's Hulk who figures it out, because everyone just thinks of him as a brute and yet just in last episode we've seen some major intelligence from him.

trust2

Iron Man and Black Panther's reactions were pretty much my favorite. T'Challa is a ruler and to learn the Earth has already been invaded, you knew he'd walk away from the team the moment that revelation went down. I just wish we saw more of his overall reaction. Though the silent treatment he gives was just wow. With Stark, we get the more shell-shocked out of all the Avengers given he's the primary character for the episode. Plus out of all of them he would be the one to worry the most.

If any big downer of the episode is that we don't really get a fight at all save an off-screen one and even though everyone knows the Skrulls are on Earth, the end game of theirs hasn't been unleashed yet. To me that was the biggest disappointment of the episode. I really thought we would get to see the Skrull's plan teased more. We know they have Stark Tech, but what else? I want more of that. Instead, we got a face of who's leading them. Yes, the revelation of the Skrull Queen was actually shocking (though it should have made PERFECT SENSE given this is adapting Secret Invasion and I should have seen it coming).

trust4

Though honestly, there didn't need to be action in this episode. This was all about the drama and tension that set off a spark that at first was slowly burning throughout this season. Now that fire is a unyielding blaze, whatever comes next has to be the actual endgame or worse, something to even tip things closer to the Skrull's favor. I have to give major kudos to the writing staff for making the Secret Invasion adaptation so far better than the actual anticipation from the comics. In the actual comic story, there wasn't ever a clear shocking double agent. It really wasn't hard to know who was a Skrull Agent and who wasn't. Here we've got TWO and who knows how many more. All I know is I can't wait to see when the Skrull Invasion happens and see those who knew it was coming (Nick Fury and Doctor Doom) react.

5 out of 5

Pretty good ep. I thought there was enough fighting action to keep things entertaining (Griffon and the little scuffle at the mansion), plus the interesting paranoia drama. Hope they take as long as they need for this story.

Haven't watched it yet but already sounds better than the rest of the season.

I was a big fan of the fact that Iron Man didn't get his way. I was cracking up when Hulk and Capskrull defended Hawkeye after he refused to surrender, so Iron Man proclaims "as far as I am concerned, there are no more Avengers" and then quits the team.

What did he expect to happen when he sneaks up on his team mates and then starts pointing fingers and accusing them on being skrulls?

T'Challa and Carol to have his back. Instead they just both up and don't fully help him and one just up and leaves. Plus it's the Hulk. Do you wanna continue saying no to the Hulk? :P

It wouldn't be wise to upset the Hulk, especially considering that they forgot to bring him some food.

I think that part of the reason why Tony didn't really get any help is because of the way he went about it. Seriously, the guy uses the stealth setting on his armor just to hide in the shadows. Then when he gets caught, he dumps the entire Skrull theory on the team and immediately points a finger at Hawkeye. Before even being given a chance to defend himself, he is being told to surrender so that Ms. Marvel can take him in. I'm just saying, Tony handled it poorly and I thought it was funny that he didn't get his way, so he took his ball and went home.

I don't get why Cap would want to keep the Avengers around. :smt102

The last bit with the Black Panther was pretty cool.

if he can control one aspect of the super hero community (which he is now that he's leading) it keeps the avengers off the skrull's trail...

i for one was shocked at who the Queen was.. though it made sense.

Too much talking and not enough action IMO.

And anyone else notice that Nick Fury went from this...

Not only that but with the trust and loyalty of the Avengers, Capskrull can effectively take out any potential threats to the Skrulls before they have time to mount any type of successful defense.

I know, I was really quite shocked as well. I honestly thought that the Skrull Queen may have replaced the Invisible Woman since Spider-Woman is a nonfactor on this show.

Everyone was getting a redesign this season. "Cap" got an Ultimate appearance, Thor his current Marvel costume, Black Panther well you saw in the episode too, and Fury well they went full on with his Ultimate appearance.

Not surprising since they already went with it on Wolverine and the X-Men which takes place during the show.

The only thing I now dread is the fact we have six more episodes before LOEB came on board and decided to focus on one and done stories ala Ultimate Spider-Man. Which means the Secret Invasion arc has to be finished up soon. :-(

I'm still kind of confused by the whole Mockingbird thing. So she killed Madame Hydra (a Skrull), thereby exposing the entire Skrull invastion to SHIELD and the Avengers, but she's actually a Skrull herself?

We don't know yet when she was replaced. However, aren't you forgetting Spider-Woman pretty much did the exact same thing. :P
