The cover to Avengers #29 fans the flames of internet rumors about the upcoming demise of Rachel Grey in Marvel's Avengers vs. X-Men event.

What happened to the Captain America we all know and love? The stress of the Avengers vs. X-Men event appears to be getting to Steve Rogers, as he has been becoming increasingly more violent as the event progresses. First there was the quietly sanctioned attempt to murder Hope by Wolverine, then an attempt to cover up this covert operation by ejecting Wolverine from a Quinjet mid-flight. Now we see this scene from the cover of Avengers #29, in stores presumably in August, where the good Captain lurks in an alley, murder in his eyes, watching Rachel Grey and her homosexual friends Iceman and Angel frolicking innocently in an impromptu ice rink.

Rumors have been swirling on Twitter and Reddit that Grey will be biting the dust in the event, fueled by her association with the Phoenix Force, Marvel's editorial quota for senseless deaths during major events, and a desire by the company to punish the character for the ongoing embarrassment of Chris Claremont's "Dino-Rachel" storyline from his last run on Uncanny X-Men.

i wouldn't particularly like it, as i've always liked her character, but it would clear out one of the more confusing-backstoried X-characters, and open up a slot for Jean when she returns at the end of AvX.*

fine, here's my thing:

why even pull the "shocking death to 'legitimize' the direness of an event!!!!!!!!!!!!!" if the only characters you kill are those who have like 10 fans? i mean, i like Black Goliath and Rachel Summers, and i'm die-harder than a large portion of comic fans (even by comic fann standards), but the best i can muster for deaths like that is...huh. ok.

if you want to make death mean anything, you have to be willing to kill important characters. or at least characters who you've spent time building up. Jean dies? big deal. Gwen dies? big deal. Ted Kord? big deal. Nova and Star-Lord? big deal.

a guy who hasn't been seen in a decade, or a girl who has maybe 12 panels of screen time in the last 9 issues of an ensemble book? nobody cares. and if nobody cares, your "big shock death" fails to even fit the purpose it's intended for, which is to make anyone care. in that case, better just to not kill anybody and let the story succeed or fail on its own merits. at least IMO

Exactly -- still miss Nova and Star-Lord. Gotta be on the short list of best deaths ever, because those characters mattered because of how they had been portrayed.

Killing Rachel Grey, if that were to happen? Nobody would blink. Nobody wants to say it, but Marvel damn near missed the mark when Nightcrawler bit it, because he had been used so infrequently over the past decade. That wasn't nearly as sad as when Cable got it in the same storyline.
