Ernie Chan, Prolific Conan and Kull Artist, Passes

Postby LOLtron » Fri May 18, 2012 1:23 pm

Ernie Chan, best known for his work on Conan the Barbarian and Kull the Destroyer, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 71.

Artist Ernesto "Ernie" Chan passed away on Wednesday May 16th after a yearlong battle with cancer.  Chan quietly built an impressive resume of work, including work on Marvel's Conan the Barbarian, whom he regularly drew for almost twenty years.  Chan also worked on characters such as Batman, Power Man and Iron Fist, and Kull the Destroyer.  Chan also worked on a number of DC covers in the 1970s, including the one pictured below.

Funeral services will be held Monday in Oakland, California.

In case you're unfamiliar with Chan's work, here's a badass Conan drawing.

I recall reading somewhere that John Buscema didn't like his inks on his pencil work with Conan. I thought then as I do now. STFU John, his inks are awesome.

For me, he IS THE Conan/Kull artist.

...............

Another punch to the gut.

Damn.

Ernie's work on Hulk and then, of course on The Savage Sword of Conan made me a HUGE fan of his.

Speaking as one of his older fans, this one hurts...

If you guys ever meet a legendary artist/writer, make sure that you tell them that you are a fan of theirs because you might never get that opportunity again...

I'm doing that when I see Joe Sinnott next month.

RIP Ernie and thanks for giving us so much!

When you see Joe, make sure to buy a sketch from him. He's one of the sweetest guys around and still can outdraw the younguns.

Yeah, I've gotten head sketches of Doom, Reed, Johnny, Sue and Ben from him. I'm going to try and get pointy-head Thing and maybe Sharon this time.

I tell him that every time I've seen him.

It's really a shame sometimes that true legends have nobody in line (besides me) when flavor of the month has a mile long que. I just work this to my advantage. In my time I've had long conversations with the likes of Jack Kirby, Julie Schwartz, Joe Sinnott, Mart Nodel, Nick Cardy, Harvey Kurtzman, etc.

I would have loved to met Ernie.

Man, it seems like I keep cursing people by reading my Essentials. First Tony DeZuniga, and now Ernie Chan. :-(
