Indicative of the "written for the trade" mentality of writers and readers of the last decade..

This book is how it SHOULD be, and how it used to be done.. seed your arcs with future plot pieces, and come back to them at a later point. Not every plot point has to be a 6 issue story arc that is wrapped up neatly so they can sell a TPB.

Hickman's run is full of ideas and plot points spinkled throughout. It's meant to be looked at as a whole run, not individual issues or arcs. He writes for the big picture.

Granted, it's understandable that with prices being what they are that may not be everyone's cup o' tea.. but if even the biggest Hickman hater like Chap can come around on it, I think it's worth the investment.

I was going to pretty much say this.

It reminds me a lot of the Claremont X-Men or Stern Spider-Man or Brubaker on Captain America in that, as Holland Oats said, he has long range plans and drops hints, picks things up at a later date and GETS the FF. It's most certainly not written for the trade or anyone who wants instant gratification after 6 issues.

Hickman's 'moments' are really gimmicks like Johnny's death (that NOBODY bought) or other characters dying just to be reborn 10 minutes later.

But he gets bonus points for having kids in the book call each other 'retard'. Now that's what I call hip and modern writing!

This was the best FF run of the last 20 years.

If you want to read some FF, go with much better runs like Lee/Kirby, Byrne, and Waid/Wieringo.

Fantastic Four under Hickman has pretty much always been $2.99.

Someone quote this so he can see it, he has me on ignore.

Utterly fantastic. I'm starting at the beginning after getting into it when FF started and it keeps getting better and better.

Don't you dare put me in the same corner as Twig. :-D

Daredevil, Fables, American Vampire, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Walking Dead, Wonder Woman, Batman, Swamp Thing, etc are probably the current 'top of the stack' books; and there's no way I can list everything from yesterday (but Kirby/Byrne's FF, Thomas/Michelnie/Shooter's Avengers, DeMatteis's Cap, Giffen's JLI, Moore's Swamp Thing, Levitz's LSH, Perez's Teen Titans, Waid's first Flash run and John's JSA are high rankers).

I think Hickman should cancel FF and just continue Fantastic Four. It's a mistake to split the kids off in their own book. Unless the title reads "Future Foundation", it will not throw off the shadow of the flagship book.

Interesting. Those are pretty much my favorite books. Maybe I just see your opinions on things I disagree with. :-D

Me too. My fave issue since Waid's first one (with Reed's bedtime story to the kids)

chap22 wrote:Speaking as someone who disparaged the run for most of the middle act for being too heavy on seemingly random ideas and way WAY too light on the actual characters and amiy dynamics that are necessary for a good FF run, if you like the FF and you have the wherewithal to expend the funds and invest the time into a long run like this, then yes it is absolutely positively worth getting. By the end, Hickman brought it all together to create a run worthy of being mentioned with the greats, a fittingly fabulous foursome of FF runs: Stan/Jack, Byrne, Waid/Ringo, and now Hickman.

Well said and I agree. It reminds me of reading comics when I was a kid when stories took a year or more to all come together. Thats what reading comics can and should be about. Stories don't need to be compressed into 4-6 issues arcs or padded to draw them out longer. A great writer like Hickman knows how to do this well and I think he has done an amazing job in FF.

I'm not sure I could disagree more.

You should still check it out, it's really great especially viewed with some distance. It's not as good as the Waid/Ringo run, but what besides Jack/Stan is?

Waid/Ringo was good, but not even close IMO. It was a bit too goofy IIRC.

I've got Hickman just behind Waid/Ringo.

I know I've gotten shit for this list before, because of Lee/Kirby but

1. John Byrne
2. Waid/Ringo
3. Hickman
4. Lee/Kirby
5. Simonson
