Carol Danvers is a Marvel Comics character dating back to the 70s who has had a long superhero career as Ms. Marvel (a name she took from MARVEL COMICS character Captain Marvel). Neither of these characters have anything to do with the DC character Captain Marvel (Billy Batson, who yells Shazam and all that).

I haven't read the whole thread because I'm on my phone, but, I don't think this is entirely correct. The Mar-Vel I remember from the 80's had Rick Jones swap places with the Captain from the Negative Zone via the nega-bands, very similar to the DC counterpart.
