Avengers Sinks Battleship! Outhouse Makes Bad Pun!

The Avengers was number one at the box office for a third weekend in a row, beating out the domestic opening of Battleship!

The Avengers is still going strong, taking in $55 million domestically and $56 million outside the US this weekend to bring its worldwide total box office to $1.18 billion dollars. After three weeks open in the U.S., Marvel's The Avengers is now the fourth highest grossing movie of all time worldwide, with only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Titanic, and Avatar ahead of it.

Comic fans, it is your responsibility to keep the Avengers going. Go and see it again, and again, and again, or live with the fact that a kids movie, a chick flick, and a furry fetish film have all beat the best the comic book world has to offer.

Battleship, a movie based on a stupid board game, had a fairly abysmal debut, taking in only $25 million domestically, though the movie, which has been open overseas for five weeks, has made a total of $215 million dollars worldwide, proving once and for all that Americans are smarter than the rest of the world.*

The numbers are industry estimates, with final numbers to be released Monday morning.

*This is actually not true, Americans made this movie, so the shame is ours.

No, the international audience was stupid enough to actually support the movie, so the shame is theirs. Americans generally knew better.

And I say that as a supporter of many of those nations.

As for the bad pun in the title, pretty much everyone who covered the top movies this week made that same pun, so you're not alone.

Yes, on a global scale the movie has been out since April 11th and it did make it's money back but the movie only made $25.1 million in North America. Green Lantern made $53.1 million on it's opening weekend in North America and it was considered a failure, even though it too made it's money back eventually.

Did it really make it's money back? Something to consider is that the grosses reported aren't what the studio gets. In the US, that's about half of the reported gross. Worldwide---outside the US, something less than half. Wasn't the budget just north of $200 million? Which means outside the US it would have to make more than $4oo million to break even.

Studios are learning that the US market isn't the only important one. If they can make a movie with worldwide appeal that will earn them profits, they will. That just means more watered down, most common denominator crap.

That is something that I am not aware of. I was just going off of the reported box office amount for both movies so far. As far as the budgets are concerned, Green Lantern was right around $200 million while Battleship was at $209 million. So I guess if you are correct than neither movie technically made it's money back and both movies are technically failures.
