Maybe it was the Earth 1 GN, I didn't read it but I heard he was pretty sullen there too. Maybe the board members thought those numbers would translate well in the new 52.

I'd just try and write good stories rather than pander to demographics but WTF do I know?

Nobody suspected he was Superman during the MOS era, when he wasn't a nebbish.

And Clark as nebbish might have worked back in the day of the Golden and Silver Ages when the Superman books were a little more lighter and touched a little more on the comedic at times, but it doesn't do so as much for a modern audience.
