Midtown Comics to Marry Gay Couple in Store

Postby LOLtron » Wed May 23, 2012 5:07 pm

Midtown Comics to Marry Gay Couple in StoreIn an effort to move from exploiting homosexuality in comics to exploiting it in real life, Midtown Comics will be performing gay marriages on June 20.

June 20, 2012, is, of course, the day that the landmark Astonishing X-Men #51 hits stores. One lucky pair of fanboys or fangirls are being invited to cheapen the most important commitment of their lives by getting married in the giant New York comic shop, presumably resulting in untold riches for Midtown as a result of the ensuing media circus. Here's what the retailer had to say on their facebook page:

To celebrate the wedding of The X-Men's Northstar and Kyle Jinadu in Marvel's Astonishing X-Men #51, Midtown Comics is looking for a comic loving, same-sex couple who would be interested in getting married in our store on June 20th for a special event! Email us at media@midtowncomics.com

So, anyone interested?! The Outhouse will pay you $25 to wear matching t-shirts emblazoned with our web address.

What?! We never said we were any better!

That's not fair. All marriage is exploitation.

I don't care if you are gay or straight, but if you go to a comic store with 4 weeks notice to get married in a publicity stunt, someone will regret that marriage.

It could be a couple that was going to get married anyway, and will still have their own ceremony at some point, but just want to be a part of something.

i think its a neat idea... especially with gay marriage being such a new thing in NY, so i could see some couple who actually was planning on getting married doing it. Gays are all for the "unique" so why not? if you are already getting married, and you are a comic fan, why not get married in NYC at a comic book store..

IMO, because marriage should be about you and your partner, and while I think there is temptation here to get involved in the media attention, I think it could be damaging to make that special day into something that's not about you, but is about a stunt or a message or, of all things, a comic book. :P

It would be different if the couple had planned this in advance, but responding to what is basically a casting call for Midtown's commercial with a month's notice seems like a poor decision. IMO, YMMV, of course.

Just because I don't know how to spell the language of some tiny African nation doesn't mean that I'm wrong in thinking that your attitude towards women is 100% wrong. Obviously, you're some skinny, single nerd living on the East Coast who probably derives value in life from wrestling matches, hoping that Wolverine gets to sleep with teenagers and engaging in casual drug use. You're literally the worst thing to happen to comics since Stan Lee.

but maybe there is a couple who have been planning for a while to get married and decide this is the best time, people get married in WAY less time, for way stupider reasons...
