So What Becomes of the G.I. Joe: Retaliation Toy Line?

Postby LOLtron » Thu May 24, 2012 2:34 pm

So What Becomes of the G.I. Joe: Retaliation Toy Line? With the movie being pushed back to March 29, 2013, what becomes of the toy line? *Updated*

This reporter spent most of the morning today going to various retailers and seeing how they're dealing with the Retaliation push-back date. As of right now in the midwest US area, Wal-Mart and Toys R Us have released the Retaliation line early (it was supposed to be out next week). Target still has all their G.I. Joes (both Renegades and 30th Anniversary lines plus vehicles) priced for clearance.

The average Retaliation figures are priced around ten dollars a pop. All the troop builders (Cobra/Joe Trooper and Red Ninja) are short packed one per case. Storm Shadow, Snake-Eyes, and Roadblock are two per case.

The rarest figures are the blue variant Cobra Commander and Red Ninja. Originally it was reported via Hasbro that the blue variant was just going to be released in the first wave of figures and a black version would be released in the next waves. That appears not to be the case as the black version showed up amongst the first wave releases.

I asked managers of both stores toy departments their thoughts of the news yesterday. All of them are fuming given the orders they put in, but one toy department will go through with their original plan of putting a massive amount of pegs for the line along with the soon to be released Amazing Spider-Man toy-line. Most haven't decided yet if they'll continue ordering from a movie that doesn't come out for another nine months.

There is still no word from Hasbro if future waves will be shipped, or what becomes of the Jinx SDCC 2012 exclusive figures.

UPDATE: I just got word from someone at Target that they will be pulling all their
G.I. Joe: Retaliation movie figures from their back room. The items are actually being sent back to Hasbro. Some stuff might leak out in the 28th at some locations, so get what you can now!

UPDATE 2: Hasbro finally has released a statementon the fate of the movie line:

G.I. Joe is an ongoing consumer franchise and therefore there is merchandise available to consumers. There is a limited amount of G.I. Joe Retaliation product at retail now, but in light of the movie moving out to March 29, 2013, the majority of the movie line will be made available early next year in time for the film's release.

Translation? GET THESE FIGURES WHILE YOU CAN!! They're all going to get recalled and then released come Febuary probably!!

The GIJoe trooper is also a variant. One has a blue cape and helmet while the second has a tan cape and helmet.

These will be 2 for one or clearanced by July 4th.

I didn't know that about the Trooper. I saw only blue cape and helmet.

I think wave two cases will have the tan one. That Blue CC is going to be hard to come by I think.

Better question: Can we get some more 30th Anniversary figures to replace them? (I'm guessing no...but it would be nice).

We just don't know. Honestly, I'm surprised the dollar Joes aren't being used as a "replacement" wave.

Just another nugget, there's a memo at TRU and other sellers to ignore the street date and just release the figures. It seems of all the stores, TRU is fully committed to sell this figures they got unlike Target.

The con is in a month. Don't be surprised to see a panic wave with the figures that were supposed to be in the movie line, but not necessarily in the actual movie... like Night Viper, Crimson Guard, Alley Viper, Cyber Viper, probably a Snake Eyes, and maybe even Kwinn.

That's not a bad idea. Actually a few variant Zombie colors inside a box would be nice.

I'd be satisfied if they just re-released some of the 30th Anniversary/Pursuit of Cobra stuff. I never did get a Low Light...
