State of Arizona Now Discriminating Against Comics Artists?

Postby LOLtron » Fri May 25, 2012 12:34 pm

State of Arizona Now Discriminating Against Comics Artists?Canadian artist Craig Wilson was denied access to the Phoenix Comic Convention for failing to have the proper paperwork.

The furor has barely died down after all the controversial illegal immigration laws passed in Arizona last year, and the state is at it again. The targets this time: Canadians. Mexican immigrants received a lot of attention last year when laws were popping up around the country, but particularly in Arizona, to do things like force anyone guilty of looking ethnic to carry and produce identification at any time, or to mandate that public officials make a "serious effort" to deport anyone found eating burritos. Now, it seems, the spotlight has turned on Canadians, as Craig Wilson, scheduled to appear at the Phoenix Comic Con at Artists Alley, was denied entry by border officials. Of course, Arizona does not border on Canada, but that will not stop The Outhouse from responsibly blaming them for the incident.

Wilson was also thumb-printed and his vehicle was searched, and an all points bulletin was put out across the border in case he tried to sneak back across. "I'm paying my own table at the con, hotel, meals, drinks. I was going to inject close to $2000.00 dollars into the very economy I was supposedly threatening."

This reporter understands the Xenophobia that surrounds Canadians. It's impossible to trust someone that consumes that much maple syrup, it's difficult to keep composure when hearing words hilariously pronounced as "oot" and "aboot," and there has got to be something going on with all those moose. And don't get us started on that un-American universal health care. At the same time, it's important to understand that we are all Americans, even those of us who live in America Junior to the North, and it's time to focus more on our similarities than our difference. For instance, many Canadians are white.

The Outhouse will continue to monitor this tense situation, as there are also reports popping up that San Diego Comic Con will be requiring all attendees to carry identification, with the supposed purpose being to reduce counterfeit badges.

From Craig Wilson:

craig wilson said...
Actually, now the dust has settled and I've talked to folks in the right places, you know what?

They were right.

Dicks to be sure; one guy could've looked at the situation, seen the hotel, flights, etc. and warned me for next time. I mean, we're not talking an ongoing career, it's self promotion more than anything, but I got the other guy this time.

Apparently, if I go down to a con with a couple samples, take orders, then ship from here, that's okay. Otherwise, I need to get a work permit/visa. Anyway, lesson learned, all the more reason for me to do a side blog on the cons for folks getting into them.

So, like so many cases of outrage of some perceived violation of their rights (which, excuse me, do Canadians have rights here anymore than I do in Canada?) it turns out that the offended individual was just ignorant and actually in the wrong in the first place.
Oh well, free publicity is always a good thing.

Regardless of the facts, The Outhouse stands by its report.

I'm not allowed to have my techs work in Canada unless the Canadian customer applies for a work visa with their government on our behalf first, stating there is not a qualified Canadian that can do the work.
However, Liefeld is an enigma wrapped in a pouch-filled, muscular, footless conundrum.

Well, I doubt that's much of a problem.
