Character Growth

Postby BubbaKanoosh » Sat May 26, 2012 11:42 am

Which character, let's say in the last 20 years, has had the most growth?

And which character is at the opposite end if the spectrum. Has taking two steps forward and ten steps back?

For growth, I'm gonna go with Cable.

I'd go with some of the minor villains myself. A character like Crossbones has done nothing but become a stronger character since his creation in the late 80s.

For the opposite end of the spectrum, I'd say Captain America, Wolverine, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye, Daredevil, Thing, Jonny Storm etc etc.

The only one I can think of who is moving in an interesting way is Cyclops.

Songbird, Mach IV, and Fixer are great examples too.

Mostly X-Men characters like Magneto, Emma Frost and Cyclops, I think.

Hulk? A lot of people are hating on Hulk right now because it's so radically different.

Oh, Cyclops is right in AvX

Yeah if anything Magneto is almost exactly where he was 20 years ago perhaps. He's certainly not doing anything new.

Bucky grew a lot as a character, but completely had the rug pulled form underneath him once it was revealed Captain America had not actually been shot with a sniper, but instead with a modified gun that instead of causing actual bodily damaged, fired a ray that sent him back in time to relive his own past experiences.

Yeah, I was gonna say pretty much all the T'bolts (although ever since the end of Civil War they've two stepped back Zemo).

Catman (sure to be wiped out in the DCnU if he ever shows up)
Ms. Marvel got a decent bit of growth
Luke Cage for sure

How has Quicksilver grown as a character? Didn't Mighty Avengers send him right back to where he's always been?

You think Wolverine has taken steps back in terms of character growth? He's the head of a school now. I think that's a pretty big departure from the anti-authoritarian team asshole he was originally presented as.

I guess Superboy, although I hated his broody, serious portrayal. Much prefer his fun, cocky 90s personality.
