DC Erases Prominent Gay Character From Existence

In an interview with Vaneta Rogers, James Robinson confirmed what LGBT advocates had been fearing for months.  Obsidian, one of DC's oldest gay superheroes has been deleted from the universe.

Obsidian, who's sexuality was first hinted at in 1996 and finally confirmed almost a decade later, is the son of Alan Scott, the Golden Age Green Lantern.  According to Rogers' interview at Newsarama, Robinson admitted that he decided to make the new version of Alan Scott gay as the powers that be had decided that Obsidian would no longer exist in the "simplified" continuity of the New 52.  In his words, "DC lost a gay character", which led Robinson to decide to make the character's father gay instead.

While Obsidian was not the first openly gay superhero at DC (that honor belonged to the effeminate Extrano), Obsidian, for a while, was the most prominent gay superhero in the DC universe until the buxom lipstick lesbian Batwoman was introduced in 52.  DC also added LGBT characters Apollo, Midnighter, Voodoo and Bunker into the ranks during last September's relaunch while simultaneously hinting at Renee Montoya's demise.

While this reporter is disappointed that DC has decided to trade one gay superhero for another, I am grateful that they decided to make a hero that has often been depicted as flaming and has a known weakness against wood as the newest, most prominent gay hero they have.  Surely, no blog or site in their right mind would ever, ever make a joke about that.

Nah, they said there are more race and gender changes coming. I, for one, can't wait for the introduction of the new Asian/lesbian Wa-Lee West.

There's nothing that says Jade and Obsidian won't turn up at some point, in some way. -

If they re-introduce him, I'm sure he will be.

Obsidian can turn up and Alan Scott can still be his "daddy".

Maybe Alan and Sam adopt an African baby, name him Todd, and he later exhibits Shadow Powers :P

This is truly a great day for gay people who love egregiously-bad comic book dialogue writing everywhere!

If I knew how, I would like to erase ALL the dialogue from that preview and ask you, Starlord, and maybe Thunderstorm to each submit new word balloons and then we could all vote on them.

I think this idea would be awesome!

I think DC has also insinuated that being gay is genetic, passed on from sons to fathers.

I am picturing some kind of DC Crisis On Infinite Earths-type comic book panel where Obsidian's last wish before being erased from existence is to gay up his old man.
