Comics are fun.

The Review Group should be fun too.

No comic shops required this week. Insufferable can be read or downloaded at Thrillbent.com. It's been pretty good so far, but they haven't made any cross-promotional toasters for it yet.

INSUFFERABLE WEEKS 1-6
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Peter Krause
http://www.thrillbent.com/
What happens when you’re a crimefighter and your sidekick grows up to be an arrogant, ungrateful douchebag? What on Earth could draw the two of you back together again?

THE MASSIVE #1
Writer: Brian Wood
Artist: Kristian Donaldson

In a post-war, post-crash, post-disaster, post-everything world, the environmental-action trawler Kapital scours the earth’s oceans for its mysteriously missing sistership, The Massive. Captain Callum Israel, a man who has dedicated his life to the ocean, now must ask himself—as our planet dies—what it means to be an environmentalist after the world’s ended. Callum and his crew will come up against pirates, rebels, murderers, and thieves as they struggle to remain noble toward their cause. Can you save a planet that's already doomed?

Review as often or as little as you like. Once you've posted 5 reviews, you will be awarded 1 pick. You can post 5 reviews, right? That's a totally achievable goal and with day and date digital releases becoming the standard, it shouldn't matter if your shop ordered enough copies of this weeks comic or not.

When multiple Review Groupers have posted 5 (or more) qualifying reviews, they will be awarded their pick in the order that they qualified. What constitutes a qualifying review? Any review posted (with a score on a scale from 0-10, that's right 0!) within 1 calendar month of the thread going live. Reviews posted while waiting in line for your pick will be applied to your next pick.

I'll be keeping track of everyone's progress with the newly christened Spreadsheet of Fantastic (RIP, Spreadsheet of Doom) and reporting the results in the Current Members list in the weekly OP. When it's your turn to make a pick, I will PM you. If you do not respond to me by Midnight EST the following Sunday, you will lose your pick and I will start a poll to determine that week's selection.

Any week in which we do not have a Review Grouper with 5 qualifying picks, we will determine the week's comic via poll.

If it's your week to pick, remember to keep it under $3.99.

Naturally, this new system is new and it may be necessary to make changes as we go.

So who knows the deal with Thrillbent? Please share with the class, the site itself with pretty vague on info except to note that the model of the site will be subject to change and likely evolve over time.

Here's the announcement recap from CBR, but basically it's Waid and John Rogers website for distributing their own digital comics. The format is like the Infinite comic Marvel did a few weeks ago in conjunction with the launch of AvX. The panels are laid out with digital devices in mind and paced a bit differently to take advantage of the format.

I think the ultimate goal is to bring in other creators and turn it into sort of an Image Comics for digital distribution, but that would be a ways off. I have no idea how they plan to monetize it, if they plan on charging for the comics they'll need to make them longer than the current weeklies.

Thanks, I'll read the recap--that was one of the things I wondered about, is it a place for Mark Waid to put the sort of work that wasn't selling well at BOOM or are the plans for the site much more wide in scale? And who pays for it now and who pays the artists?

But that may be in the CBR thing I'm about to read. I vaguely remember hearing this announced maybe on BC but immediately wrote it off as ew webcomics which just aren't for me as a reader.

For right now, Waid is paying for it by selling off his comic collection.

I see, Mark Waid sold his comic book collection to finance the start-up and pay the artists, etc. and will experiment with ways to monetize the site content in the future.

Hmm. :?

Ideally, I would want to see it turn into an app where you buy story content that equates to around 10 minutes at 99 cents per installment.

The website model dependent on advertising seems obsolete to me.

I don't see ads funding a whole new line of these digital comics alone, that's for sure. Plus I think Waid will have to heavily advertise the site itself as well.

The article on CBR mentions that TB would go "live on May 1 with a new series every week"--distinguishing that from the weekly Insufferable content updates--and that hasn't been the case. I don't actually see any other series other than a promo for Luther.

Luther was just a test thing they did for the process based off of an old Waid short story.

The CBR quote was probably supposed to be new issues rather than new series. John Rogers is supposed to have a new series up soon, but it hasn't been announced yet.

Well, thanks, I now know a little more about what Thrillbent is in theory, I guess, keeping in mind it is just getting off the ground.

I have them all downloaded and will read and review them when I can.

About my pick, I do believe The Massive #1 from Dark Horse is going to be out next week, so that's what I'm going to choose.

Did I Punchy this week's thread by picking a non-traditional comic?
