this could explain why Savage was not inducted in HOF

-from wrestlescoop-

...Ryback’s victims on RAW this week were announced as Arthur Rosenberg and Stan Hansky. As previously noted, they were indy wrestlers Kirby Mack and Stoney Hooker. They were announced from Downers Grove, Illinois and recited a poem together, which internally was meant to be a rib on Lanny Poffo, the brother of Randy Savage. The belief is they ribbed Poffo because he recently made it clear that Randy’s family won’t allow him in the WWE Hall of Fame unless he’s inducted with Lanny and their father Angelo Poffo. One of the names of the wrestlers was the real name of a WWE merchandise executive.

Yesterday was day nine of New Japan's Best of the Super Jr Tournament:

http://www.puroresufan.com/njpw/?p=3625

NJPW, 6/6/12 (Samurai! TV)
Tokyo Korakuen Hall
1,900 Fans – No Vacancy

1. Best of the Super Jr. – Block B: Tiger Mask IV [8] beat Hiromu Takahashi [0] (6:50) with an avalanche-style double-arm suplex.
2. Best of the Super Jr. – Block B: Alex Kozlov [8] beat beat Daisuke Sasaki [4] (10:05) with the Russian Strike.
3. Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: Taichi [4] beat KUSHIDA [6] (2:33) with a Taichi-style Gedo clutch.

5. Kazuchika Okada, Shinsuke Nakamura, YOSHI-HASHI & Tomohiro Ishii beat Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto, Tetsuya Naito & Tama Tonga (16:37) when Okada used the Rainmaker on Naito.
6. Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: Rocky Romero [6] beat Angel de Oro [8] (10:38) with a diving double kneedrop.
7. Best of the Super Jr. – Block B: TAKA Michinoku [6] beat Ryusuke Taguchi [8] (11:11) with the Heavy Killer #1.
8. Best of the Super Jr. – Block B: Low Ki [14] beat Brian Kendrick [8] (10:37) with the Ki Crusher ’99.
9. Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: PAC [8] beat Prince Devitt [8] (17:24) with a Shooting Star Press.

* The dominant Low Ki wins Block B with two shows to spare after his seventh win in the Super Jr. tournament today. The second spot from that group looks to be between Tiger Mask, Taguchi, Kendrick, and Kozlov.

* PAC’s big main event win over Devitt means Block A is up in the air with four stars fighting for two places in the semi finals.

-

Block A:
1. Prince Devitt [8]
- Jushin Thunder Liger [8]
- PAC [8]
- Angel de Oro [8]
5. KUSHIDA [6]
- BUSHI [6]
- Rocky Romero [6]
8. Gedo [4]
9. Taichi [4]

Block B:
1. Low Ki [14]

- Alex Kozlov [8]
6. TAKA Michinoku [6]
7. Daisuke Sasaki [4]
8. Jado [2]
9. Hiromu Takahashi [0]

Low Ki has to be one of the favourites to make the finals at this point. The other fights look to be going down to the wire.

And day ten was today:

http://www.puroresufan.com/njpw/?p=3629

NJPW, 6/7/12
Tochigi Bunka Center Sub Hall
750 Fans – No Vacancy

1. Best of the Super Jr. – Block B: TAKA Michinoku [8] beat Daisuke Sasaki [4] (6:22) with the Heavy Killer #2.
2. Best of the Super Jr. – Block B: Brian Kendrick [10] beat Jado [2] (8:31) with the Sliced Bread #2.
3. Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: Rocky Romero [8] beat Gedo [4] (8:41) with the Gargoyle.
4. Hiroyoshi Tenzan, Satoshi Kojima & Captain New Japan beat Toru Yano, Takashi Iizuka & Tomohiro Ishii (10:15) when Iizuka was DQ’d.
5. Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: Taichi [6] beat BUSHI [6] (9:33) with a small package hold.
6. Best of the Super Jr. – Block B: Alex Kozlov [10] beat Tiger Mask IV [8] (10:30) with the Russian Strike.
7. Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: KUSHIDA [8] beat Angel de Oro [8] (8:22) with the Midnight Express.
8. Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto & Tetsuya Naito beat Kazuchika Okada, Shinsuke Nakamura & YOSHI-HASHI (17:35) when Tanahashi used the High Fly Flow on YOSHI-HASHI.

* Block A is in a state of chaos going into the last round of group stage matches on Saturday. The only one of the six men tied on 8pts who can be ruled out is Angel de Oro (no matches left), who made a flying start to the tournament but tailed off badly with a series of defeats.

* Block B is won by Low Ki as we all know, with Kozlov and Kendrick both on 10pts. Kozlov’s loss to Kendrick on 6/2 means Kendrick is currently second and Kozlov faces Low Ki on Saturday so his odds of advancing are not great. There is also the possibility of both Kozlov and Kendrick losing and one or more of the three men on 8pts winning, which would confuse things quite a lot.

-

Block A:
1. Prince Devitt [8]
- Jushin Thunder Liger [8]
- KUSHIDA [8]
- Rocky Romero [8]
- PAC [8]
- Angel de Oro [8]
7. Taichi [6]
8. BUSHI [6]
9. Gedo [4]

Block B:
1. Low Ki [14]
2. Brian Kendrick [10]
3. Alex Kozlov [10]
4. Tiger Mask IV [8]
- Ryusuke Taguchi [8]
- TAKA Michinoku [8]
7. Daisuke Sasaki [4]
8. Jado [2]
9. Hiromu Takahashi [0]

Wow, what a fight Block A turned into. I'm sad, but not shocked that Angel de Oro couldn't pull off a surprise semi final spot. Still, the fact that he was off to such a fast start shows that New japan will probably use him quite a bit more. As for who of the remaining five at eight points will take the two semi-final spots, I have no idea, and that will make the final day of the round robin portion very exciting.

Block B hasn't been as big a fight with Low Ki pretty much taking it. The big story on the final day of the round robin portion is going to be Kozlov vs Low Ki. I like Kozlov more than I like Kendrick, so I hope he can take the win and Block B's second semi-final spot.

I thought PAC was going to be out of it, but he's right back in this.

It's amazing how fun it is to read these results every year, even as I watch very very little of the Japanese stuff.

I think Low Ki is going to win all the way until the final.

It's fun to write these every year. :D

The only thing I miss doing from last year is being able to post some matches. New Japan posted almost all of the non-televised matches on Youtube last year and that added a neat new aspect. They didn't do that this year though and I have to say I miss it.

I think Low Ki is going to win all the way until the final.

That's what I'm thinking to. He's the current IWGP Jr Heavyweight Champion and I figure whoever faces him in the final will win, setting up a title match.

If he does go undefeated it'll be impressive. There have been others who have gone undefeated in the BOSJ, but only at time when it was a single, six man block. Nobody has ever gone without a loss since it expanded to this many competitors and to two blocks.

That's how I see it playing out. If he goes undefeated into the final, he looks amazing, and the win by whoever beats him looks insanely impressive. Especially if it's a guy like Devitt who struggled early and had to get his shit together and overcome tough odds just to get back there (I don't think it will be him).

On the other hand, a crazy run to the finals by Liger and then an unprecedented undefeated win by Low Ki would also be a nice passing of the torch type of thing.

And of course, a shocking semi-final loss for Low Ki (or two straight losses to a guy like Kozlov) could also be an interesting set up for potential future feuds.

Day 159.

Continuing the ROH doubleshot, I watched the 6th Anniversary Show.

The show opens with Julius Smokes giving Jigsaw and Ruckus a pep talk for their titleshot tonight. Thankfully, everyone has made it to this show.

The opener is Delirious vs. the Human Tornado. They play around a bit, doing some mighty fine comedy before the Age of the Fall (Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black) storm the ring for a no contest. This leads to an impromptu tag match with Tornado/Delirious against the AOTF. The match is a frenzied affair and an incredibly fun opener. Tornado adds a fresh dynamic, but I think this is the last time we'll see him for awhile. Jimmy Jacobs scores a win (FINALLY!) for the AOTF, using the End Time on Tornado.

Next is a terrific in-ring segment with Nigel McGuinness. Nigel threatens to not defend the title tonight on account of his health. He's just not certain he should risk injury prior to a PPV taping. The crowd, of course, is not enthralled with that idea. They chant, "YOU'RE A PUSSY!" Danielson comes out and agrees not hit Nigel in the head to make sure the match happens. Terrific stuff, setting up what's to come later.

Brent Albright vs. El Generico is next. This is a more traditional match with Generico getting utterly decimated by the power-house heel and then mounting a spirited comeback. Nothing wrong with this one, for sure. Albright gets the finish with repeated knees to the head, knocking Generico unconscious.

The Larry Sweeney Show for this DVD features some good promo-work from Sweeney, but ends with one of the most uncomfortable things I've seen. It's basically simulated rape and truthfully has no business in ROH. Less said the better. Next is Kevin Steen vs. Joey Matthews. This match is pretty meh as Joey just isn't hitting the stride he needs to in ROH. Steen wins, so who cares really?

Austin Aries vs. Go Shiozaki is next and it's a hell of a match. Lots of great back and forth action with both men just leaving it in the ring. They hit each other with all the big moves and eventually Aries FINALLY gets a win. Afterward, the AOTF try to recruit him again. Sunny makes her ROH return though and tries to recruit him herself. Aries opts for neither in favor of taking time to think it over.

Backstage, Becky Bayless interviews the NRC. Davey wants to get laid tonight, but Rocky says he needs to polish the belts instead. I'd reckon the NRC might regret treating Davey like a bitch at some point.

Next is the NRC (Rocky Romero/Davey Richards) vs. The Vulture Squad (Jigsaw/Ruckus) for the tag titles. Fun little tag match here as both teams feed so well off of each other. The NRC are perfect as stiff, douchebag bullies and the Vulture Squad are perfect as highflying babyfaces. Despite their best efforts, the Squad loses, but it takes Jigsaw receiving one hell of a beating for that to happen.

Next is Erick Stevens vs. Necro Butcher vs. Roderick Strong in a No DQ match for the FIP title. This match is just insane. So much violence and brutality in it. Tons of a chairshots to the head that in retrospect weren't good decisions. Lots of spots onto a chair. The finish is particularly insane as Roddy tries powerbombing Necro through a table, but it comes off more like a Pedigree. Then Roddy just tries powerbombing him and Necro lands awkwardly, but it's enough for Roddy to win.

The main event is Nigel McGuinness vs. Bryan Danielson and it is every bit of a classic. Going in, Nigel has a mixed reaction of course and Bryan has opted not to strike Nigel in the head. So that's our set-up. Shortly into the match, Bryan drops Nigel with a belly-to-back suplex and Nigel's head bounces off the ring. Nigel gets huffy and storms out of the ring. The ref tries to convince him to get back in and the Nigel DECKS him! Understand that in ROH, this was completely unheard of. Sure, guys like Morishima have shoved the ref away or Homicide have attacked them, but this behavior is something you would NEVER see from the ROH Champ. And then ref DQs him! And THAT cements Nigel's epic heel turn. Nigel tries to escape, but the locker room has too much respect for the championship to let that happen. Kevin Steen, Austin Aries, Roddy Strong, and Delirious all refuse to let him leave the ringside area. Then, in what was at the time a completely unique moment and very rare occurrence - Cary Silken forces the match to be restarted. Nigel immediately blindsides Danielson and works the arm over for the duration of the match. Danielson mounts a comeback and gains a lot of momentum, coming close several times to putting Nigel away. There are multiple occasions where Danielson would normally go for elbows-to-the-head, but opts not to. Then in a moment of sheer booking brilliance, Nigel catches Danielson off-guard with a headbutt. Nigel strikes him a few more times with them and then nails a series of elbows to Danielson's head. Nigel finally finishes him off with the London Dungeon submission. Great fucking stuff, here. Five stars, for sure.

So as a follow-up to Eye of the Storm, this was a great DVD. Epic stuff top-to-bottom and one of the best ROH main events ever.

Match of the Day goes to Bryan Danielson vs. Nigel McGuinness.

Day 160.

Today I finished off disc 2 of the Bryan Danielson comp.

The first match on it saw Bryan Danielson/Tajii Ishimori vs. Naomichi Marufji/Atsushi Aoki. It was a perfectly fine match, but like so many on this DVD, it wasn't a classic or anything. All of the men in it were very exceptional, it just didn't click to a higher level. Danielson won with Cattle Mutilation.

Next was Bryan Danielson/Davey Richards vs. Rocky Romero/Atsushi Aoki. NO REMORSE CORPS EXPLODES~! Davey starts the match by spitting in Aoki's hand. He then spends the next ten or so minutes paying for his transgressions. It's only when he tags Danielson in that they make any sort of progress. It breaks down inevitably and Davey ends tapping out to Romero's cross arm-breaker. This was a really fun match with a good story to be told.

Finally, the DVD ends with Bryan Danielson/Nigel McGuinness/Rocky Romero vs. Takeshi Morishima (w/ ROH belt!)/Go Shiozaki/Muhammad Yone. It's a pretty great match that burns like a wick on a stick of dynamite. It's fast-paced and explodes in the end. Great stuff all around from all involved as they just bust their asses off to give some good action. The finish is Yone putting Romero out with the Muscle Buster. This one is worth tracking down.

Match of the Day goes to Bryan Danielson/Nigel McGuinness/Rocky Romero vs. Takeshi Morishima/Go Shiozaki/Muhammad Yone.

4. Best of the Super Jr. – Block B: Ryusuke Taguchi [10] beat Brian Kendrick [10] (9:59) with the Dodon.
5. Kazuchika Okada, Shinsuke Nakamura, YOSHI-HASHI & Tomohiro Ishii beat Hiroshi Tanahashi, Hirooki Goto, Tetsuya Naito & Tama Tonga (17:40) when Okada used the Rainmaker on Tonga.
6. Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: Taichi [8] beat Rocky Romero [8] (9:58) with a Taichi-style Gedo clutch.
7. Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: Gedo [6] beat KUSHIDA [8] (10:32) with the Gedo clutch SN.
8. Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: PAC [10] beat BUSHI [6] (8:35) with a 360 Shooting Star Press.
9. Best of the Super Jr. – Block A: Prince Devitt [10] beat Jushin Thunder Liger [8] (12:13) with the Bloody Sunday.

* A dramatic day in Block B saw every result go the way of “Funky Weapon” Ryusuke Taguchi and his win over Kendrick meant he sneaks through in second place behind Low Ki to the semi final round. Young lion Takahashi also recorded his first win of the tournament with a big upset over TAKA.

* PAC and Devitt qualified from Block A both on 10pts with PAC in first as he defeated Devitt at Korakuen. A good comeback by Devitt who started the tournament with two losses in a row.

-

Block A:
1. PAC [10]
2. Prince Devitt [10]
3. Jushin Thunder Liger [8]

6. TAKA Michinoku [8]
7. Daisuke Sasaki [4]
8. Jado [4]
9. Hiromu Takahashi [2]

-

NJPW, 6/10/12 (Samurai! TV)
Tokyo Korakuen Hall

1. Best of the Super Jr. – Semi Final: Ryusuke Taguchi vs. PAC
2. Best of the Super Jr. – Semi Final: Prince Devitt vs. Low Ki
3. Best of the Super Jr. – Final:

Well, things didn't go the way I thought they would, not that that is a bad thing, it's actually very good. Looking back over what has recently been happening in New Japan, I'm actually not shocked that Taguchi made the semi-finals. He's a guy who, as Prince Devitt's tag team partner, has been in Devitt's shadow for a while now and New Japan has been showing signs recently that they may have been thinking of moving him out of that shadow.

I'm thinking right now that we're going to have a Ryusuke Taguchi vs Low Ki final with Taguchi winning.
