DC Comics quietly announced that they were cancelling the low-selling title
Captain Atom with issue #0. The series, considered to be one of the weakest of the New 52, was hailed by critics as "slow paced", "weird" and "just awful". It also experienced a freefall in sales, shocking absolutely no one. Interestingly, the series is ending with an origin issue, which promises to show exactly why the series sucked.
An unnamed DC executive mentioned that the cancellation was partially due to the release of
Before Watchmen: Dr. Manhattan miniseries, which greatly outsold the cancelled
Captain Atom. "Why have a cheap Dr. Manhattan imitation when you can have the real thing?" he mused.
This marks the second series to end this September, joining
Justice League International. Despite mediocre series falling left and right, the Outhouse can confirm that
Savage Hawkman, written by industry pariah Rob Liefeld, was not cancelled.
