Frankenstein: Agent Of SHADE #10 (Time-snipers Spoilers)

Postby Punchy » Sun Jun 17, 2012 9:51 am

Matt Kindt comes on board the good ship Frankenstein, and he continues the quirky, anything-can-happen nature of the title that Lemire set up. Right from the start he’s fighting evil insects with swords, which is a good way for any writer to start their tenure, the world needs more insects with swords. But he’s not just fighting these dudes for the sake of it, there’s a mole in SHADE and he has to find them! This of course leads to a mind-bending trip to an other-dimension. The city of Untropolis is an intriguing place, and Alberto Ponticelli does really well to make the actions of our heroes easy to follow in amongst the MC Escher madness. Kindnt seems to have a good handle on the characters of this book, but I did feel that perhaps he went to the ‘Frankenstein quotes old literature’ well a little bit too much. I wonder why Frank kept seeing flashes of some blonde woman being strangled? Is Kindt going to show us his origin? I’d be down for that.

I was surprised to see Matt Kindt's name in the solicits for this and was tempted to buy, but I'm afraid the Frankenstein book will continue to feature outlandish and interesting characters but cached in fairly uninteresting conflicts and situations like it was under Lemire.

I will buy two copies of each Mind MGMT issue though.

I don't think you could describe the situation in this issue as uninteresting.

Shouldn't underestimate Mr. Kindt, I guess. What about the art, how's that?

It's good, it's the same guy as Lemire's run.

Untropolis is an interesting place, I wouldn't mind seeing a series set there. It could make for some cool stories I think. When it comes to the rest of this issue, Crowley seems to be an fun antagonist. I do like the swerve at the end where she reveals that she was told that Frankenstein is a traitor -- me thinks things aren't as they appear here.

One other thing:

What the heck is going on with Khalis on page #6? It looks like he is being dissolved in that tank, but no dialogue is used to explain. :?

Better inker this issue though. Looks really good unlike a couple issues ago.

The art is why I didn't pick up Lemire's run, and that hasn't really changed. Which is a shame.

It's swung greatly in my mind. They've been going through inkers like nobody's business, this latest one seems to gel best, but you may dislike Ponticelli on principle (which would be a shame cause you'd never read Unknown Soldier)

I think Ponticelli is a good fit for this character, he wouldn't work for Superman or whoever, but for an off-beat book like Frankenstein, he's great.

I agree entirely. I think he was doing his own finishes (or the colorist was doing it) and the inker they brought in for 7/8 ruined it (seriously, I almost dropped the book). The current guy is doing a much better job.
