Transformers: More Than Meets the Eye is Awesome.

Postby SuperginraiX » Fri Jun 22, 2012 7:34 am

I'm one of the biggest Transformers nuts on the planet but I lost almost all interest in Transformers comics right in the middle of All Hail Megatron and finally stopped dutifully buying them nine or ten issues into the ongoing. I've heard I didn't miss much.

ANYWAY, I decided to give the two new ongoings a try by buying them on ComiXology as soon as they hit the price drop. Robots in Disguise is... well, it's typical Transformers "the war is over and now we all have to figure out what to do with a comic" stuff that has happened way more than you'd think possible. More Than Meets the Eye is a different story.

I mean, seriously, it's a different story.

Most of the cast is made up of also rans. There's hardly a Decepticon in sight. Both Earth and Cybertron are out of the picture. It is still the best Transformers book I've read in years. Maybe ever, if it keeps up the momentum.

If you're not a fan of decompression, this comic is for you. I just read a two-parter that focused on Ratchet and First Aid and the thing just seemed DENSE. Subplots brought in the rest of the main cast and furthered the main story but you also got this very interesting two-part story with a beginning, middle, and end. It was four bucks well spent.

I was such a fan that I decided to double dip on the comic and pick up the first trade. That gave me some mixed feelings since it was a twenty dollar trade that only had four issues in it. They're GOOD issues and I'm glad it's on my shelf but it seemed more than over-priced and made me wish I would have waited for a sale. Anyway, it got me excited about the Transformers comics so I went on a digital shopping spree to pick up what I'd missed.

So, yeah. Transformers MTMTE is awesome. I am tired. Now you know.

Yep, James Roberts is the best Transformers writer in years...his Prime and Megatron one-shots were brilliant. As was his Last Stand of the Wreckers mini.

As for "no Decepticons in sight"....I think you must've the solicit for next issue at the back introducing the Decepticon Justice Division :P

"hardly any Decepticon in sight." ;)

There were those two Genericons in the Ratchet arc, after all.

I just think it's great that someone has figured out how to tell a different kind of Transformers story. I love a sweeping battle story as much as the next Transfan but sometimes it's good to remember that all of these Transformers came with a tech specs bio, giving them all a personality. While Roberts doesn't religiously follow these bios, his characters all have an individuality to them that impresses me. Costa's run was filled with a bunch of interchangeable Transformers, for the most part. Even Prowl just became a face in the crowd instead of the awesome douchebag that he'd been before. For the little I read, the only ones that struck me an individuals in that run were Ultra Magnus, Thundercracker, and Swindle.

My only small complaint with MTMTE is that I'd rather Nick Roche was on art instead of Alex Milne. Milne is definitely turning in the work of his career so it's a tiny complaint. It's just that Roche's first issue had an awesome look to it. I'm pretty sure I've seen Roche's name on some future issues so I guess I'll wait and see.

Eh. It's alright. Certainly better than the previous iteration... but it feels off to me. Both titles do.

Just read the latest issue. Can't believe how much story Roberts crammed into a single issue. Having just read the rest of my weekly pile and breezed through it, I felt like I'd been reading so much more.

Good story too...unless you liked Fort Max
