Should I add Brubaker to this ever growing list? I wonder if Perez will join soon as well?

I don't think you can add anyone who used their position and popularity as a big two writer to launch an independent career as them saying "no" because they left the bridges there for if they fail
"used" yes, but they didn't say "no"
and if they stay with Icon or Vertigo, they didn't say "no"
and, specific, Bru is still writing for Marvel - winter soldier

A question GOSD has been asking for years.

Seeing as how he said he'll be writing Winter Soldier as long as he can, I don't think so, no. And I agree with RU.

Because it's obvious an ever growing group of comic book writers are fed up of the confinements of the big 2 publishers and are leaving to pursue their own original properties.

I'm more impressed with the successful people who never needed the big two to have a successful career

its all well and good that people are off doing their own thing, but they weren't "fed up" when they needed pay checks, its only after they had enough money and clout that they found their moral outrage at the business practices of the employer who took the financial risk on them

good for you, you stuck to your guns when it benefited you
whoopdeedo

(oh, but you'll still write for them if you get the call or you fall on your face)

It's about being realistic though. You're not going to be able to get name recognition without the big 2, and for a while you might enjoy it there. In the long term the fact you're not really accomplishing anything must grind you down though.

Of course, most of them will come right back in a few years like boomerangs once they realize they miss the stability of a regular paycheck ...

so, you're not all about the saying "No!" as a moral stance? You don't really see them as standing up to the big two, just a sort of retirement so they can work on their dreams?

just happy to see writers you like become successful enough to make money other ways?

ok, then, that's fair

these aren't heroes spitting in the face of overwhelming cooperate oligarchies, rather they are everyday people doing what people do

hell, if it meant I could do whatever I wanted and I didn't have to turn anything in on time and I could afford it, I'd quit my job too

"George even made the comment that his and Marv Wolfman's New Teen Titans run would never happen in today's landscape, because of the restrictions on using certain characters or wanting to involve them in certain stories."

This is why comics will never ever satisfy people. How can anyone be expected to work under these conditions?

The best comic runs for me have come when the companies have effectively said "fuck it". When Stan Lee made Spider-man and FF he did it not knowing how popular they'd become, he just wanted to do something new. Marvel gave X-men to Claremont, and there obviously wasn't any editorial guidelines as he used all new characters. Runs like X-statix, Runaways, New Teen Titans, Suicide Squad all came about, and had no editorial restraints.

This is why you'll see the creatives leaving Marvel/DC more and more.
