A gunman opened fire in a Colorado movie theater.
Source: 12 shot dead at 'Dark Knight Rises' screening in Aurora, ColoradoAn armed man reportedly wearing a riot gear opened fire in a movie theater in Aurora, CO at a midnight showing of
The Dark Knight Rises. Twelve people were killed and fifty others were injured, according to NBC News. The man, whom authorities have identified as 24 year old James Holmes allegedly threw a smoke bomb as well as firing into the crowd. Some moviegoers reported that they initially thought that the incident was somehow part of the show, as Holmes started shooting during a scene in the movie that involved gunfire. NBC also reports that children were among the injured, including a three-month-old.
We extend condolences to all those who lost loved ones, and send our deepest sympathies to the Aurora community.
On a more personal note, I feel like I have to somehow express how truly saddened I am by this. I attended a midnight showing of
The Dark Knight Rises, and really enjoyed myself. I hate the fact that while the showing I was at was gearing up for its climax, people on the other side of the country who just wanted to watch the same movie were being shot at and hurt or killed. I don't know how this type of thing happens. I don't know what we'll be hearing about James Holmes in the days and weeks ahead, and about what drove him to do this. I do know that none of it will make this make sense. People should be able to go to a movie theater, watch a film, and come home safe and sound, and brimming with the excitement and exhilaration that filmmaking provides. Viewing a film in a room full of other excited people is one of the most important ongoing experiences to me, and you just never expect tragedy like this. I don't have much else to say. I hate that this happened, and I'm sorry it happened. This is an isolated incident, and I hope this type of thing doesn't happen again for a long time. I do hope that those of you who will be seeing
The Dark Knight Rises just take a second to think about the people in Aurora, CO. Say a prayer, if that's your thing, send a positive vibe, whatever. And let's all take care of ourselves.
