I wouldn't have picked Howard either, but I guess it makes sense.

you just decide to throw Sabathia out on the "half a year" principle?

I'm confident that Pujols will win the NL MVP -- or Berkman, Utley, or Braun.

This wouldn't be a bad year to give it to a pitcher -- if there's one out there that was that valuable to his team. Brad Lidge, maybe?

If you give Sabathia the award, you'd have to give MVP to Manny

If you're talking about MVP, I gave him a quick spin through the forumula, but he comes up well shy. I plugged Manny in there as well. If you're talking Pitcher of the Year, April through June counts too.

Ozzie is quite simply the greatest defensive infielder of my lifetime (and maybe ever, but i'll let stat, etc start arguing why he isn't). but seriously, as much as i love the Wiz, stat's right...offensively, he couldn't hold Musial's jock.

Considering Howard only really produced for less than half a season, he was hitting .234 with a sub .500 slugging on Sept 1 and was hitting around .200 at the beginning of July, I would give Manny the MVP over him. Plus he wasn't very good in late game/close game situations and really only hit well against shitty pitchers. Struck out 199 times, the most common result of a Howard at bat was a K.

Here is OPS vs pitcher faced ERA.

3.50 ERA or less:
Howard: .619
Pujols: .866

3.51 to 4.25 ERA:
Howard: .851
Pujols: .1124

4.26 to 5.25 ERA:
Howard: .785
Pujols: 1.185

Over 5.25 ERA:
Howard: 1.295
Pujols: 1.271

Average in Late and close game situations.
Howard
Late & Close .158 avg
tie game .263 avg
within 1 run .272
within 2 runs .256

Pujols
Late & Close .314
tie game .398
within 1 run .368
within 2 runs .360

More numbers from Baseball Reference.com

vs Power pitchers
Pujols .327/.425/.593/1.019
Howard .217/.298/.465/.763

vs Finesse pitchers
Pujols .426/.528/.757/1.285
Howard .293/.379/.612/.991

vs RELIEF pitching
Pujols .339/.465/.690/1.155
Howard .193/.306/.431/.737
thats a pretty stark contrast

So you have one guy who hits more HR but that is pretty much all he does other than K, where another guy dominates across the board. One guy just tears up shitty pitchers, the other guy hits well against all pitchers.

Howard isn't even the MVP of his team. If he wins the award the award is a joke. IMNSHO. :D

More stats

innings 7-9
Pujols .352/.472/.697/1.169 12HR 28 RBI
Howard .141/.263/.316/.580 9HR 25 RBI
may also want to note that Howard had 35 more AB's

innings 10+
Pujols .333/.333/.667/1.000
Howard .100/.357/.100/.457

Personally, I dont disagree with you. But I wanted to see what happened with that formula. I was suprised that Howard came away with it. He did lead the league in homers and RBI's, which played a big part in his "formula driven win". I think Pujols will win the NL MVP, I dont see the voters giving it to Manny for two months in the NL(yes, yes I know how good he was but still).

i just say Manny because I think they were both red hot for short periods of time, but I think Manny carried his team longer than Howard did his and he only played 2 months in the NL. If we hadn't lead the league in blown saves Pujols would probably have been a unanimous choice since wee would have won 90+ games while most experts figured us to win about 70.

My MVP would be Pujols with Lidge as runner up for his 48/48 save season. After watching us blow 32 saves this year having that kind of closer really shines with me.

Still cool posting, I agree with the rest of it.
