"Venture into the Abyss" (click on the thumbnail to see the larger pic)

Some background info:

The Venture Society is a group of explorers composed of Earth heroes, scientists and privatized soldiers. Some years ago, they discovered a massive artifact called the "Spindle", believed to be created by some long lost alien civilization. It is a vast cylinder, several hundred miles in diameter which stretches the entire length of the galaxy. The structure itself is a shell built around a cosmic string. The intense gravitational field of the string allows an orbiting vessel to reach speeds far in excess of light.

The Spindle is the largest object in the galaxy. Possibly the universe, and it is now where Venture bases their operations.

The primary members are:

-Jehanne Pucelle: once known as Joan of Arc. An immortal warrior and heroine who can heal any injury. Not even immolation can keep her down for long. She is a founding member.

-Doctor Infinity: an atlantean who fought alongside the Allies during WWII, and one of the greatest minds on Earth. He came out of a secluded retirement in his secret mountain fortress to join the Venture Society at jehanne's behest.

-Steel: a sentient android created by the now-dead hero once known as the Rifleman. This powerful living machine carries the famed weapon of his creator in memory of a fallen hero.

Solaris: One of the founding members of the Hypermen, she was thought long dead. But the nuclear-powered Hybrid had evolved into a higher form of life and became a living sun, roaming free among the stars.

--Dr. Renee Scott: granddaughter of Franklin Scott, the Rifleman. She bears her grandfather's stellar genius and knack with machines, and grew up alongside his android creation, Steel. She knows his systems better than anyone and he convinced her to join him in the venture Society.

The Villains:

-The Lamashtu: a demoness of tremendous power and ancient evil. She claims to be the heir to the power of the fallen mother of evil, Tiamat, and is a long-standing foe of Jehanne.

--Qingu: The monstrous son of Tiamat and consort to the Lamashtu. He is the general of the dark armies that comprise the Children of Tiamat.

In this picture, Lamashtu and Qingu have lured Jehanne and her teammates to the fould and berren planetoid which once served as a prison for Tiamat's sleeping form, and which is now the resting place of Great Wyrm's fossilized bones. The two demonic creatures are obviously spoiling for a fight, but even though the Venture Expedition Team outnumbers the monsters, Jehanne is wary. For with the cunning Lamashtu, nothing is ever as it appears..

I draw them with pencil and paper and then scan them in to photoshop.

Before i was able to...acquire...photoshop, I worked completely on the page, coloring, inking and shit by hand. Learning digital inking and digital coloring I thought, would have been easier. But it's really not. It's just cheaper in terms of materials...

Damn. Nice work. Pedi is the world's biggest advocate of digital inking and coloring - he does everything in Flash, the bastard. I hate him for his girly Flash obsession.

The only thing that's kkeping them from being totally digital is that I have no talent at drawing things directly into photoshop with my Wacom. So, like I said, i do the line art with pencil and paper, scan that in. Then, I do the digital inking. Then the digital coloring. After the flat colors are laid out, I use the shading i did on paper as a guideline for the shading and high lights of the digital colors.

After that, the scanned pencils are removed from the stack of layers, and I flatten the whole thing down into a more portable file.

I used to have such scorn for digital coloring, thinking it was like cheating. Until I tried it myself. It's still an ongoing, learning process...about seven...eight years since I first started digital coloring, maybe?

Uh...................... I only do inking and flash animations in flash......... all my digital "painting" is done in Photoshop.... but a long while ago, I started the digital paintings in Painter 5.
