Bomb Queen cover

Postby Jimmie Robinson » Tue Mar 24, 2009 7:13 pm

Here's the latest cover to Bomb Queen Omnibus[t]

Pencil/ inks
I knew this was a mess of a pic, so I left the faces on the buildings in pencil (yes, I pencil pretty tight -- I use a mechanical pencil), I didn't want it to compete too much with everything else. Basically, I wanted a group shot, since this is a omnibust collection of 3 volumes and a one-shot. I wanted to show many of the characters... however, I also wanted to show "the City" that Bomb Queen protects, because that's usually what everyone is fighting for. I also reverted her back to the original costume and even gave her a breast reduction (she wasn't so big in the first issues). But since this collects the first volume I thought why not at least look like the interiors.

With colors
And here you can see I changed a few things. The biggest being the cat ears in the background. He pet cat, Ashe, who plays a major role in the finale should loom over them all. However, it was just so messy that I took it out. I needed to simplify the thing (as much as I could). I also pulled the Queen out in front making her line art solid black while I used a color hold on the buildings in the background. I also attempted to merge the characters somewhat into the building color... fading them off here and there.

The coloring scheme I kept as "candy bright" and stayed away from dark and moody.
It's almost an anime color style.

True, I should fix that G-string / Belt-thingie. Pull up her "pants" and cover her all up. Haha!

Nice! Although, her left arm seems a little short... and her left boob, a little small. :P

Ah, why not go on a roll, now that I'm here at the Outhouse...
Blame GREG for dragging me here. Haha!

This was the last cover of the current series [volume 5]
(came out a week ago in comic shops)

It all started with a sketch idea (on the back of some paper)

Image

Then I ran with the ball from there.
Again, using my Hello Kitty mechanical pencil. The pencil lead is blue, so it doesn't show up, and then I follow over that with another mechanical pencil using regular lead.

Image

As for coloring, this time I kept it ALL in pencil - to eliminate the line weight and focus on the color rendering. Again, I'm using a "candy" style, keeping it bright and not moody / gritty. I wanted to color hold the outline on the skin. But since it was overlapping and dripping all over the place it looked a bit confusing without the line weight. So I just kept it reduced to a dark gray.

I do everything on the covers.
For the interiors I do everything except the colors -- which is done by Paul Little.
If I had the time I'd color... but sadly I do not. Hah! Though I did color volume 2. a few years back.

Amanda Conner? I believe you're thinking of The Pro.
Which some folks would like to see a one-shot team up between these two characters.

True, and you're not the first to notice that.
I still have a month until this goes to press, I can do more fixes on it.
One of the advantages as the guy who wears all the hats. Hah!

JimmyKitty?! Of course you're right man. I got confused because I know I've seen Bomb Queen before and it just hit me!

I'm Hunter. We used to post together at Sequential Tart. I've posted tons of my artwork and checked out yours at the old forum. Sheesh, it's been awhile. Glad to see you still knocking out the awesome artwork man.

Long time no see.

Ah, time to move away from Covers... let's show off an interior page.
This is from Volume 5, issue #3, page 1.

According to the script I had it with panel 2 reversed.
I wanted to show the pissed off Queen, just as I showed the scared characters 180 degrees.
And I tossed in the idea of a Camel Toe Cam.

Image

But it didn't help the POV of the camera angle in the fist panel. In fact, it wasn't easy to figure out where the CTC (Camel Toe Cam) was at since there's no reference. So I switched it to this. I also liked it because it played with the symmetry of the inside of the thigh coming down to the arms of panel two. Granted I cheated on the hips making them curve in quickly... Blah, blah, blah...

Image

Then I gave it some inks. I should note here... I LOSE a lot between my pencils and inks. Honestly, I should be penciling and darkening it in photoshop and just let it be. Hah!

Image

Then Paul Little added his colors and I dropped in the word balloons and lettering.
Since these guys are talking all over each other I didn't bother with balloon "tails" on this page. I just wanted the effect of them "talking" to be obvious.

Image

More interior pages coming.
Why not just take an art dump in the outhouse. Hah!
