AMC Theaters Bans Costumes At Movie Screenings

AMC Theaters Bans Costumes At Movie ScreeningsThe massive theater change has banned masks and costumes from theaters in the wake of the Colorado tragedy.

Source: Various Press Releases

AMC Theaters released a statement about the tragic shooting during a Dark Knight Rises midnight screening in Aurora, Colorado this morning. The theater does not intend to change its movie schedule, but will be beefing up security and banning masks and costumes from showings. It is unknown whether this new policy will be permanent, effectively ending the tradition of cosplaying at movie premieres. Here is the statement:

AMC Theatres is deeply saddened by the Aurora tragedy. Movie going is part of our social fabric and this senseless act shakes us to our core. We're reinforcing our security procedures with our theatre teams, which we cannot discuss in detail for obvious, safety reasons. Local law enforcement agencies, our landlords and their and our local security teams are stepping up nationwide to ensure we provide the safest environment possible for our guests. We couldn't be more grateful for their collective support.

At this time, our show schedules circuit-wide will not change. We will not allow any guests into our theatres in costumes that make other guests feel uncomfortable and we will not permit face-covering masks or fake weapons inside our buildings. If guests wish to exchange or refund any tickets, we will honor our existing policy and do as our guests wish. We are taking necessary precautions to ensure our guests who wish to enjoy a movie this weekend can do so with as much peace of mind as possible in these circumstances.

The tragic incident, which resulted in the deaths of twelve people and the injury of many more, occurred at a Century theater, part of the Cinemark family of theaters. Cinemark has yet to release a statement on their future policies, but they did release this short statement earlier today:

Cinemark is deeply saddened about this tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families and loved ones, our employees, and the Aurora community. We are grateful for the quick and professional reaction of all local law enforcement and emergency responders.

Cinemark is working closely with the Aurora Police Department and local law enforcement.

So far, other than the Paris premiere, no Dark Knight screenings have been canceled on a large scale. Warner Bros. has, however, pulled all television and radio ads for the movie, and adjusted some of the violent imagery related to the movie on their website out of respect for the victims.

Well, Chicago cancelled their midnight showings, that's arguably on a larger scale than a single screening in Paris, isn't it?

The latest news reports I could find said Chicago theaters decided not to cancel them. I looked specifically for that because IvCNuB4 mentioned it. Do you have a link?

No, I thought IvCNuB4 would know the latest Chicago news, but maybe not.

So one terrorist in the most literal meaning of the term has won. His actions in one theater have scared theaters around the country into wasting money on extra security and are forcing paying customers to not celebrate the opening of an anticipated movie as they have done for years without incident.

There was a shooting in a Bronx theater two weeks ago. Where was the national panic and media coverage for that? The national media and the public are acting just as the Joker in the Dark Knight explained to Harvey Dent. A shooting in the Bronx is expected. No one panics. A shooting in a theater in a flyover state and every one looses their shit. Every one is acting the way the terrorist wanted them to act. Millions of people shouldn't be changing their lives because one asshole or a few assholes does some stupid shit once every few years.

Cosplayers are not your enemy AMC. They are just NERDS and paying customers. Don't use this tragic incident as an excuse to bully people that are different the way schools did after the Columbine shooting or how we made Muslims the enemy after 9/11.

UPDATE - FRIDAY 4:45PM CST: Contrary to media reports, costumes are not banned, but we will not admit guests with face-concealing masks and we will not allow fake weapons in the buildings. We want all our guests to feel comfortable at our theatres and we will be closely monitoring.

thats what most of the stores do near me on Halloween
no big deal

Well, it's good they clarified it. The original statement reads "We will not allow any guests into our theatres in costumes that make other guests feel uncomfortable and we will not permit face-covering masks or fake weapons inside our buildings," which implies it is more than the masks and weapons. Though honestly, it's probably a good idea to ban costumes at least temporarily, just to avoid misunderstandings.

AMC has a HQ out in the 'burbs. They said on the TV news that the midnight shows were being cancelled. Let me check some of the local news sites for an update.

First of all, that's some classy shit right there.

Every one is acting the way the terrorist wanted them to act. Millions of people shouldn't be changing their lives because one asshole or a few assholes does some stupid shit once every few years.

I haven't gone in-depth on this, but did he say he wanted people to stop dressing up in costumes? I don't think he had much of a gameplan other than being fucking insane, so let's stop this nonsense about how the terrorist won.

Cosplayers are not your enemy AMC. They are just NERDS and paying customers. Don't use this tragic incident as an excuse to bully people that are different the way schools did after the Columbine shooting or how we made Muslims the enemy after 9/11.

Bullying? You're acting like they're making people strip naked to watch their movies. Oh no, the horror of having to wear normal clothes to be seen in public!!!! Even though we now know it's only full face-masks and weapons that are banned, it's still ridiculous to get this incensed about cosplay like it's a civil right. If you want to dress up to go out in public, put on a suit and tie.

They aren't doing this out of respect. It's to provide a false sense that they are protecting the public. The same way we have to take off our shoes before we get on an air plane.

Dressing up as the Joker would be in bad taste. The people who would be effected by the ban would most likely be dressing up as Batman. The hero. The guy who kicks the Joker's ass.

AMC thinks its the police?

totally the same thing, you have convinced me

what about people dressing up as Bane - they're affected!

I was watching WGN news when (I thought) I heard that. So, good news: I may have misunderstood "No Midnight Premier Showings". Oops.

With the popularity of the Joker following the last movie, it's not at all unreasonable to think there would be a lot of people who would dress up as him to go to these movies. Now what? Do they do it anyway? Does someone do it BECAUSE of this? Does someone do it because they like the Joker, and then someone else is scared/pissed off/whatever about it? Like I said, to avoid misunderstandings, it's probably best to just say "no costumes" for the next week or two.
