I've watched some of the new shows, so here's the first in a small series of posts giving a quick rating of each.
Hyouka ***/***
My favorite from last season continues. Well animated, some great characters and good stories. Well executed over all including the music. Simple mysteries but still extremely well done. Highly recommended.
Rinne no Lagrange 2 ***/***
It's baaack! The second season has begun of one of the better giant robot shows in a while. Well animated and a good to great story continues to unfold. Recommended.
Accel World ***/***
Well animated and a nice twist on virtual worlds crossed with videogames. Good characters, pretty nice relationships between them and well paced. In the near future, everything will be neuro linked, ie controled via technology that allows you to blend virtual reality with the real world as well as access vr worlds. Hidden amongst this is the Brain Burst game. Basically if invited in, you can improve yourself in real life with the software as well as use it in the game. You can become smarter, faster, etc. The players are factionalized into legions. No one is going for the top level. Our heroes intend to go there. Recommended.
Sword Art Online ***/***
Again.. Well animated and a nice twist on virtual worlds crossed with videogames. This time, it's 2022 and a new virtual reality RPG has been released. Problem is, the genius inventor is a twisted insane bastard too. I don't want to spoil the first episode, but what starts of a little stale, becomes a top notch show before it ends. Lots of potential. Recommended.
Gundam AGE ***/***
Gundam. I'm a Gundam junkie so I rate this higher then it deserves. It's a nice freshman/almost kiddie giant robot show. Interesting with the multigeneration hero concept. Good time killer if you like giant robots.
Saint Seiya Omega **/***
I'm a fan of the original Saint Seiya series, so this sequel is worth it for me. The animation is nothing amazing and the stories are typical but not bad. Good time killer for most, must for Saint Seiya fans. Basically, as with the original series first plot, the Saints are corrupted and only a handful stay true. They bond with each other, gain more power and confidence along the way.
Binbougami ga! **/***
Spoke a bit about this show prior to this. Girl has an amazing amount of good luck in looks, brains and physical ability. It's causing things to go south for many around her, so a goddess of misfortune has come down to deal with her. Thing is, her good luck is at god-like levels. Tons of wacky humor. Recommended if you like over the top humor.
Campione! **/***
Hero gets a tablet from his grandfather. Turns out it can allow him to steal power from the gods. Humor mixed with adventure so far. Not bad over all but not wowing me.
Kokoro Connect **/***
A group of friends form a school club. Over a period of 24 hours, four of the five switch bodies with each other. They have no clue why or how, but for forty minutes, this happens. The preview showed that it'll happen beyond just they're group. Add in the character dynamics and some support characters and you get what could be a really good show. This one could climb in my ratings. Check it out.
Tari Tari **/***
Well animated show that has nothing to do with sci-fi, fantasy, horror, etc. Just a group of friends forming a music club as the one girl is forced to quit the choir club because of the teacher's attitude. Kind of boring if you are not looking for something other then a simple drama with bits of comedy. Watched the second episode. More of the same from the first episode, but the characters are growing on me.
Charming so far but like I said, simple drama.
Hagure Yuusha no Estetica **/***
T&A -ish show. Boys and girls (teens) are being teleported to an alternate world that is of a D&D variety. There they gain powers. Some manage to get back home via dimension gates, some don't. Some keep those powers that gained, so the government has set up schools to help train them to use those powers to help humanity. Our hero has however, brought a girl native to the other world to Earth, claiming she's his little sister. She's really the daughter of the Demon Lord of the other world whom the hero defeated. She could could evil. Add to this the typical other characters and you've got this show. Okay, maybe a good time killer, but time will tell.
Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate **/***
T&A -ish show with what looks like a mix of over the top humor (sex based) and a drama. The main characters make up the Food Club. A club that basically lets them all enjoy snacks at the school's expense. Mostly all gals, with one straight male (main character) and one gay male (who's after the other guy). For some reason, the main character is seeing strange things in relation to other students. Such as the Student Council President seeming to be wearing a mask, another student having a spinning propeller sprouting out of the top of his head.
Throw several censored scenes, lots of archtype girl characters and a young woman teacher who is constantly drinking beer... occasionally using her chest to push the draft handle.... yeah... this is for Herald... SD... Alima... Oh the drama? Starts off with a girl being run over at night. No humor involved. Seems that they layered in a more serious story under the goofball T&A weirdness comedy this is. Intriguing and could get a higher rating as time goes on from me.
Oda Nobuna no Yabou **/***
Guy some how falls back in time 450 years-ish to the feudal era in Japan when Nobunaga united Japan. Thing is, Nobunaga is actually Nubuna a girl. Most of the famous folks from that era are now girls. He now has to take the place of the famous samurai who helped it all happen, since that actually fellow died protecting the hero. He is of course being called a pervert by all the girls... when they aren't calling him a monkey. Okay time killer.
Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita */***
Humanity is dying out and is at an almost village like level. Add faeries and you have this freaky little show. Boring too. Could get better I guess, but I don't hokd much hope on that happening. Who knows, this could be for you... or not. Freaking faeries are probably evil...
Watched the second episode, still kind if weird. Real weird. Getting weirder... shows some promise now... maybe.
Arcana Famiglia */***
This one is sort of the Hiiro no Kakera this season, but mixed with the obligatory formula characters. On the island of Regalia, a "family" of people with powers protect the island for all comers. Maintain the order and look badass... or try to, back during the early 20th century. The "Papa" of the family is stepping down, so he's set up a competition between the members for one of them to prove to be the best and therefore his successor. Also, his daughter's hand in marriage is offered to the winner. She's in the competition as she doesn't want to be married off. Yeah... nothing really great here. Second ep has been watched, no change in ranking, despite a cute little white kitten pwning a couple of the characters.
Dakara Boku wa H ga Dekinai */***
T&A fest. Remember High School DxD back two seasons ago (Winter)? More of the same sort of with better animation. Boring. Main character is a perv. Gets hooked up with red headed grim reaper gal... sex jokes galore with lots of fanservice. Herald, this show is for you.
Kono Naka ni Hitori Imouto ga Iru */***
Rich kid inherits a major company. His mother orders him to go to a private school that has a large female population and find himself a wife.
The wrinkle is that his half-sister is one of them and she wants to be his bride. Add in several more gals vying for the same thing from him.
Boring. Formula. Nothing really works. Fanservicey too. Shut up T-Word crowd.
Muv-Luv Alternative - Total Eclipse */***
For this one, it's really just the giant robots that are making it work for me. Otherwise it's lame, boring and formula. Earth is invaded, now teenaged girls must pilot giant robots to protect Japan and the Earth in this war that is being lost. Oh and deal with closet lesbian feelings coming out. Watched the second episode, dropped to the bottom. Just another boring slaughterfest. GRAPHIC slaughterfest.
