Shinji accepts the human instrumentality project in the show and he rejects it in the movie. that also leads to the theory that the rebuilds are sequels to Eoe, when they say "rebuilds" it's a literal term the world of eva in these new films is a rebuilt earth that's why there are similarities to the show but also new twists
the 1st film gives a few clues
they show the moon having what appears to be a huge blood stain/ perhaps lcl stain on the surfaces this would match perfectly to what happened when angel Rei bled all over the moon in eoe. Secondly when Kaoru shows up in the last scene with what appear to be 5 coffins next to him:"This time I'll definitely make you happy shinji" again at this point in the movie series they haven't met so I think this is a fairly strong clue as to what's going on and here again this follows with the idea that this is a do over.
the second has a few more call backs like shiji trying to destroy the geofront by stomping on it (in eoe this was in his mind he was boy stomping on it) in the film he does it in eva unit 01 that's fairly minor but something that does stick out.I think the most telling sign in the 2nd film is Seele's logo it's changed slightly ..what did they add? a serpent biting it's tail..that's ouroboros a symbol of something reaping infinitely. Obviously this is all speculation but it's fairly interesting to talk about

I haven't seen the new movies, I thought they were doing the school comedy into full extent, or I read it somewhere, I don't know
To develop their conscience and consciousness, to make them aware of what is going on, to prepare the precarious ground for the future alternatives—this is our task: "our" not only as Marxists but as intellectuals, and that means all those who are still free and able to think by themselves and against indoctrination, communist as well as anticommunist.

I don't know which ending I'm talking about, but I believe I found them both to be needlessly overcomplicated and a bit pretentious. Again, like a lot of Square stories.

I've long since lost track of exactly what I've seen and what I haven't but - from what I recall - I didn't really like the ending to the show (though I understand why they had to do it like that) but I loved the ending to the movie that I saw.

It was clever of them to deal with their money problems by having the last episode be this stream-of-consciousness thing but it wasn't very well written and mostly consisted of characters describing their own motivations in as many words.

The movie I saw was an awesome psychedelic head-fuck. My interpretation was that when Shinji is basically catatonic in the movie, that's when the ending to the show is taking place inside his head and then after he snaps out of it he changes his mind.

But it's been years and years since I saw it and I can barely remember anything so possibly I've just imagined all of this.

I mean I feel that it's density is what makes it good. I mean the show starts off as this ho-hum big robots vs big monsters thing and by the time it's over it's dealing with complex interpersonal relationships, theology and and all kinds of other things. It's been said that Anno a lot of these elements are just there as window dressing however imo the fact that some much is left open to interpretation makes it much more enjoyable

While I get that, I still fell that "open ended" is sometimes a codeword for "we don't really know what we're trying to say."

There are pieces like Inception, while open ended and rife for multiple interpretations, that also has a more coherent story.

I feel that for Eva, people need to go outside of the anime to get what's going on. Any time anyone has ever tried to tell me that they "got" what was going on, they always refer me to something outside the anime to do so.

you got a lot of it right but I doubt that it's shinji's mind I think it's all happening for real Shnji is the lynchpin of the universe basically a Jesus type character but unlike mister Christ he's terribly insecure, mentally broken and ultimately selfish instead of accepting the human instrumentality that would usher in harmony he rejects it and he recreates the one person he really loved Askua

eltopo wrote:so I would say I'm a diehard fan of the original series (and the end of eva movie death/rebirth can suck my balls) anyway I finally watched the second of the "rebuild" movies 2.22 you can (not) advance it took me a while to finally watch because I hated the first rebuild movie mainly due to the fact that it just seemed like I was re-watching the same thing that I had already seen before there wasn't much new here at all. But that is not the case with the 2nd movie my god it's F'ing awesome it takes everything that I loved about the series and condenses it into a pretty amazing film. The action scene are incredible (the opening scene grabs you right away),the animation is fantastic and the ending ??? holy fuck I cannot wait for the third and forth movies (nothing coming out till Fall 2012 in japan)
if you've never seen eva these rebuilds are perfect and somehow if you're a diehard like me it's also perfect in fact there's a theory that these movies are acutally sequels and not remakes but I won't get into that
anyone else a fan here ? I feel like this may have been brought up before

I am almost sure the reason you liked You Can(Not) Advance is this...

I think at least three of your personal fetishes are present here.

I sort of agree with both of you. Things are happening at a cosmic level, inside Shinji's head, I mean, he is the last one with a head and he is still figuring it out, the whole "complementation doesn't work".

you know in all honesty the one thing that I hate about eva (really anime in general) but especially eva is the fucking fan service. 1. the eva pilots are 15 years old so to me it's fucking weird to have Auska and rei all sexed up 2. it does sorta kill it's serious tone at times to have these interesting characters (like Auska) have these really emotional scenes like in the movie she's trying to cope with her loneliness and of course they scene has to start with a close up shout of her panties and ass ...sigh japan
oh and of course her fucking plug suit for when she pilots a new eva it's 80% see thru..facepalm

I loved Eva when it first came out, although I haven't watch it in years. I've known about these, but I'm waiting until they all release to watch the films together.
