Apparently, I can't function without television

Postby Royal Nonesuch » Mon Aug 25, 2008 9:57 pm

I just moved into my new place yesterday, and am still lacking TV. I went to all three major cable companies in the area, but it looks like I'm going to have to wait a while for any service. Even Direct TV is booked up for a while, it seems.

I never realized how dependent I was on the Ol' Idiot Box. It's so quiet without the background chatter. I'm going to miss The US Open, which I've been looking forward to all summer, I'm going to miss the beginnings of lots of TV shows...and, to make things worse, my new roommate apparently doesn't even watch TV, and thus doesn't want to split the cost of cable, which I was kind of hoping for.

I think I'm going through withdrawals.
The witness said Mr Brown then called out to Ms Hay's adult daughter: "Look at this, I'm tittie-f***ing your mother!".

If you've got internet, you've got tv, it's called P2P downloading.

You'll find you're not missing much, except the sports stuff that isn't in your town.

Yes I do, and I've got a bunch of as yet unwatched DVD's, so I'm not in a complete void. I can finally start watching The Wire...which is what I'm going to do right now.

I gave up TV some time back, after realizing I wasn't really using it. I spend my time online, and if I want to watch something bad enough that's what DVD is for. I also run music 24/7, which kills the quiet and is much better than TV, especially with the lack of commercials.

I'm much happier for it. I suggest trying to last a little longer without, you might end up getting used to it and liking it better. For me, I love being unplugged from all the propaganda bullshit that floods the television airwaves, and being able to control my own information flow. It's nothing short of liberating, honestly.

About a month ago I was without internet and TV. My TV was taken care of after a few days but I was without internet for almost a month.

Two weeks ago we had a crazy thunderstorm here that killed my tv reception for a full 24 hrs on the saturday through to sunday morning.

It just happened to be the weekend my flatmates were away at a wedding, and my girlfriend was also away.

Even with the internet, an xbox 360, a couple of hundred books and another couple of hundred comics, and an extensive dvd collection, i found a way to miss tv, because it was opening day of the football (soccer football, not stop-start-stop-start-bounce-off-my-extensive-padding-football) season and i couldn't watch Match of The Day.

Dark times.

TV means little to me these days but I'd definitely go through withdrawal if I lost internet access.

I'd probably learn to live without it, though, if it became necessary.

If you do become one of those people that don't watch television, please don't be a braggart about it. (and no, kitty, I'm not counting you among them:)--welcome to The Outhouse, btw--your welcome thread is waaay too long to jump in!)

It annoys me when I'm talking about a television show and some yuppie putz feels the need to inform me that they "no longer watch television" like they're suddenly the Prince of Persia or Queen of Sheba. They'll drone on how they get sooooo much done and read sooooo many books, blah blah blah. Charles Dickens was the Victorian equivalent of Big Brother and Survivor, so kiss my ass. And no, I don't care about the authenticity of your frickin' Arts & Crafts wallpaper, either.

February '09, I think. And after that, you just need a converter box to pick up the signal. And the government is issuing a $40 voucher for people to use towards purchasing those boxes.
