He's on the board of directors for the National Organization for Marriage. That's enough for me to not want to support anything of his.

LOL, I'm glad someone else commented/replied first (shaddap, Rob

).
Her writing style is easy to follow, but the ideas are unoriginal and the plots are obviously lifted from the classics (Pride & Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, etc.)

I understand the controversy and OSC is a well known homophobe. I figured that the library spent the money on the book and Tim wouldn't.

You guys may not believe this but: JK Rowling.

never read her either, no desire to read the Potter books.

Right, right, I couldn't remember all the details of the issues so many people have with him but I figured you'd elaborate.

I have The Brothers Karamazov. Been trying to read the stuff I own this break.
Read:
Of Mice and Men
An Enemy of the People (Arthur Miller's adaptation of Ibsen's play)
Animal Farm
And I'm going through The Communist Manifesto now.
I didn't expect the first and last books to be so depressing--I actually didn't know they were. Animal Farm was actually extremely scary--I was expecting a nice story about animals. I'm quickly going through The Communist Manifesto; I think I'll go read it again after I'm done with it but more thoroughly. Though it's a small book, it's not so easy to go through.
Maybe I'll read Alice in Wonderland next.

Me too, but I was forced to "listen" to the first book-on-tape on a roadtrip tears ago. It was horrible, especially listening to the gruff-voiced dude pretending to be a little girl.

It's easy to read, and I do think she has a decent sense of pacing.
Those are about the only positive comments I can think of about her work. Her characters are bland, her stories are cliche, and the prose is just not very good.

I've been chastised for claiming this, but Rowling isn't any more 'talented' than someone like Stephanie Meyer, imo. Rowling just writes something more male reader-friendly, so she gets an out.

I disagree.
Rowling is much better at character development and world building.

I've never read any Steinbeck, come to think of it.
George Orwell is great, except for I couldn't get into Road to Wigan Pier. It was pretty bleak and depressing too though.
Some classics authors I love besides the Russians are Aldous Huxley, H.G. Wells, and William Faulkner.
