Avengers: The Underrated and Underappericated (Nominations)

Postby SilverPhoenix » Wed Apr 04, 2012 2:31 pm

With 32 days until the biggest Superhero movie in history (so far) gets released, now is a very good time reflect on how the Avengers has changed in the past 7 years. In that time, not only has Avengers become the face of Marvel as a whole, but it has also become (for better or for worse) the almost exclusive home of the Movie Stars, the "big time" comic book sellers and the pet projects of the big time creators at Marvel.

Taking all of that into consideration what Avengers is right now, it's a perfect time to celebrate the past of the this historic team. Namely the aspect that allows anyone to answer the call of something greater than themselves to become better than they've ever been. In the vein of such a celebration it's time for the Outhouse to nominate and vote for its' All-Time Underrated and Under Appreciated Avengers Team.

Now before we begin the show, here are a few ground rules about nomination (these rules are subject to suggestion and alteration)

- Everyone can nominate up to 5 Past Members to become part of the team

- Nominations will start from the moment the announcement goes out (which is now) and end on April 11th at 11:59PM

- The Top 30 Nominees will go onto to the voting round where the All Time Team will be decided.

Who can not be nominated
1) Any Avenger that's going to be in the upcoming Movie (i.e. Captain America, Hawkeye, Hulk, Black Widow, Thor and Iron Man)

2) Any Avenger that's had top and sole billing in a feature film in the 2000s (i.e. Spider Man and Wolverine), which means that Fantastic Four Members that have been Avengers can be nominated.

3) Luke Cage is also disqualified simply because "New Avengers" has been his team for the past 5 years.

4) "Relative Spotlight Newbies" like Iron Fist, Dr. Strange, Jessica Drew Spider Woman and Red Hulk are also disqualified from this poll (If there are any other characters that I may have missed, then I'll amend this section) simply because they're featured frequently in big time Avenger books at the moment

Now that we've got that out of the way, let the nomination and debating begin!

Big Update: Rule 5 has been thrown out of the window due to the fact that it was shortsighted.

I'd definitely argue that the Wasp has been underappreciated, especially in the "modern" era of the Avengers.

Wasp. Some Avenger. Bitch can't take a single back-handed slap to the face. She belongs in the kitchen making cookies with Jarvis :P

Black Knight
Shulkie
Capt. Marvel/Photon
Mockingbird
Firestar

Okay, then let's open up the discussion as to who should be nominated.

Since Chap bought it up, I'm going to open this discussion to everyone on the forums by asking this question.

Where do you think the window of nomination is too tight and how can open things up so we can make them less restrictive?

From there, I'll revise the nomination rules.

And while we are in the topic,I would argue Scarlet Witch not only had been uderappreciated but downright disrespected. In many of the big stries and most memorable eras of the Avengers she had been portrayed as anything from a romantically indecisive woman, a perpetual victim, and most recently an insane deus ex machina.

my biggest problem is with this one:

5) At the moment, big time Avengers like Hank Pym, Wasp, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Beast, Wonder Man and Quicksilver are also disqualified, but can qualify if the nominator gives a good reason as to why they should be on the list. (as before, if they're are any other characters that I missed, I'll amend this list ASAP)

what qualifies as "big time Avenger"? Tigra would fit on this list as well as Beast due to WCA. Black Panther and Herc would fit based just on being a big name. what about two of my noms, Black Knight and Capt. Marvel? they both have long runs in the book, were around for major storylines, and Monica was even a long-running chairwoman. i just think this ends up being too broad a distinction which makes your available nomination pool too narrow.

And...I dunno...Dr. Druid is powerful as shit, but is super-lame. I hate including him on my list but he was one of the first dudes I thought of.
