Barry Allen Makes A Big Splash on Arrow

The much talked about debut of Barry Allen, aka The Flash, finally arrived on last night's Arrow and his reception has been largely well-received.

There is never a shortage of fanboy concern when superhoroes are cast.  Are they buff enough?  Do they look too old?... too young?  Not bald enough?  Too typecast?  etc.  But fan precognition is also often wrong when it comes to casting.  They are much better at telling you how an actor did with the role after they've seen it, and never shy about sharing their thoughts.  Fortunately, for Grant Gustin, the actor playing Barry Allen, people love him.

His character makes a good addition to the DC tv-universe, and offers a more light-hearted personality than Oliver's usually darker mood.  I could definitely see him as a leading man, and much like they used the character of the Flash in the (old) Justice League animated series, his playful attitude can turn him into the Peter Parker of the DCU.

It was definitely a good move for producers to realize what they had in their hands and roll Flash into a full pilot for his own show.  Out of all the major super-powered heroes of the DCU (that DC would allow on TV instead of holding for movies) he probably has the best chance to carry an ongoing series and makes a good compliment to Arrow.

Originally, it was believed that we would see Barry Allen's Flash origin during his appearance in Arrow, but now that he is getting his own pilot that is up in the air.  They certainly wouldn't lose anything by giving him more screen time in Arrow and a solid kick-off as a new hero with a standing audience.  But, that would leave them to find another method of kicking off his show.  Whatever they choose, Barry Allen on Arrow is a success: "The Scientist" garnered 3.2 million viewers and commanded a 1.1 rating among adults 18-49. That makes it the most watched episode of the season.

Stay tuned The Outhousers for the best rundowns of Arrow and Flash.  You can check out our ongoing Arrow Annotation series where we look at easter eggs and other extras in the show.  We'll be doing the same for Flash when the new series launches.
