No, Italian drivers are about the worst in the world: and Rome is one of the better towns. You should see the Milanese drivers!
We didn't get to see Milan when we went to Italy a few years ago (Rome, Siena, Florence, Venice, Napoli, Capri and Sorrento). Rome was the worst we encountered, but Napoli was a close second.
Now for some insane reason, we signed up for the Amalfi Coast bus tour. That was, without a doubt, the most terrified I've ever been in a vehicle. This big-ass bus quickly turning sharp curves on a road attached to a cliffside with (admittedly beautiful) views of the ocean as far as the eye can see. I'm glad I did it once it was over, but during it, I think I bent the armrest.
Florence, on the other hand, had calm and courteous cab drivers. Of course, Florence is one of, if not THE, most pleasant city I've ever encountered in every aspect.
