BBC Books to publish "lost" Dr. Who story by Douglas Adams

Postby LOLtron » Thu Mar 24, 2011 2:01 pm

BBC Books to publish BBC Books to publish "lost" Doctor Who story by Douglas Adams in March 2012.

BBC Books is to publish the "lost" "Doctor Who" story "Shada", an unbroadcast adventure of the Time Lord written by Hitchhikers' Guide author Douglas Adams.

Production of "Shada", the planned finale to the 1979-1980 season of "Doctor Who", was stopped due to industrial action at the BBC, and the story was never completed. This novelisation draws on drafts of the script and production notes, with "Doctor Who" script writer Gareth Roberts completing the story, featuring Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor.

De Petrillo said: "Douglas Adams' serials for Doctor Who are considered by many to be some of the best the show has ever produced. 'Shada' is a funny, scary, surprising and utterly terrific story, and we're thrilled to be publishing the first fully realised version of this Doctor Who adventure as Douglas originally conceived it."

Years and years ago (I was in college at the time) the BBC released a version of Shada on VHS that had Tom Baker narrating the missing pieces.

Ok, now, I'm a New Who fan and Douglas Adams fan. So Adams wrote for Doctor Who or is it just this one "lost" episode?

Douglas Adams wrote three episodes for Dr. Who.

"The Pirate Planet" (which is available in the Key to Time box set) and
"The City of Death" (which is available standalone)

Unfortunately novelizations were never done for either of these because Douglas Adams wanted to do them themselves.

The City of Death is a really good story.

The Pirate Planet had some good ideas but some clunky execution.

Adams was also the producer and script editor for several years.
