THEATRICAL DEBUT OF GROUNDBREAKING ANIMATED SHORT “PAPERMAN” SLATED FOR NOVEMBER 2, 2012, IN FRONT OF WALT DISNEY ANIMATION STUDIOS’ WRECK-IT RALPHBURBANK, Calif. (June 15, 2012) – Walt Disney Animation Studios (WDAS) announced today that “Paperman,” a groundbreaking short film combining the best of the computer-generated and hand-drawn animation worlds, will make its theatrical debut in front of “Wreck-It Ralph,” a hilarious, arcade-game-hopping adventure that hits theaters nationwide on Nov. 2, 2012. The short will play in front of “Wreck-It Ralph” for most international markets (release dates vary by market). Taking the art of animation in a bold new direction, “Paperman” is directed by John Kahrs and produced by Kristina Reed.
Using a minimalist black-and-white style, the short follows the story of a lonely young man in mid-century New York City, whose destiny takes an unexpected turn after a chance meeting with a beautiful woman on his morning commute. Convinced the girl of his dreams is gone forever, he gets a second chance when he spots her in a skyscraper window across the avenue from his office. With only his heart, imagination and a stack of papers to get her attention, his efforts are no match for what fate has in store for him.

Gkids toons in to arthouse animationNew York-based distrib Gkids made a big splash at the recent Annecy fest, which drew buyers from around the world looking for the kind of animated art films that are the event's stock in trade.
Gkids picked up three films for U.S. distribution in as many days at the fest: Joann Sfar's "The Rabbi's Cat," Remi Bezancon and Jean-Christophe Lie's "Zarafa" and Goro Miyazaki's "From Up on Poppy Hill," from Japan's Studio Ghibli.
That acquisition flurry is the latest sign of GKids' headlong dive into what founder Eric Beckman sees as an underserved market in the U.S. -- lovers of artsy, auteur-driven animation for children and adults.

One would think that DTV releases wouldn't take quite so long. It's not like they care as much as they do a feature.

The kids weren't THAT stereotypical.
Unless you're saying that every person of Chinese descent is thought to exclaim "Wham bam, we're in a jam!!"

It's a shame in one respect. They were going to have actual Asians voicing the characters, but they thought that the actors' accents were too thick...

But the only character who didn't have a standard American accent was Charlie Chan himself, who (for the first time in history) was actually portrayed by an Asian man, Keye Luke.
