Mike Mitchell to Direct DreamWorks Animation's Trolls

DreamWorks Animation has announced today that Mike Mitchell is set to direct their upcoming Trolls. Emmy Award-winning writer Erica Rivinoja will provide the screenplay.

Mitchell, currently directing the live action sequences in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 2, has garnered a fan base among family audiences for hits such as Shrek Forever After, Sky High and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, and has a proven track record taking legendary characters on new adventures. Rivinoja has been lauded for her work on comedies including "South Park" and "Up All Night." Under the direction of this new creative team Trolls will be distributed by Twentieth Century Fox on November 4, 2016.

"Mike and Erica are the perfect team to reimagine this film," said Chief Creative Officer Bill Damaschke. "Mike's pedigree in shaping stories with already beloved characters is second to none, and Erica's amazing sense of comedy will introduce the Trolls to a new generation of fans while keeping the spirit and appeal audiences have loved for years."

The film, which will be a grand scale musical comedy centering around how the Trolls came into their vibrant and colorful hair, will be produced by Gina Shay (Shrek Forever After).

John Cena and CM Punk to Voice Flintstones Characters

About a year ago we wrote about how Seth MacFarlane's Flintstones reboot was permanently delayed, but now comes the news, via Deadline, that Warner Bros. and WWE Studios are teaming up for a new animated Flintstones movie - to be released worldwide on Blu-ray, DVD, VOD and digital download in 2015.

And being that it's a joint venture with the WWE, expect some notable WWE Superstars and Divas to make voice appearances - like John Cena as John Cenastone and CM Punk as CM Punkrock. And, naturally, Vince McMahon as Vince McMagma. Yes, Fred and Barney will attend a prehistoric WWE main event. No word on whether or not the only WWE star who wouldn't need to change his name, The Rock, will be involved.

Ha ha!

China Makes “Crood” Gesture
After seven weeks in release, the animated film The Croods was pulled from mainland Chinese theaters two weeks in advance of its expiration date after Chinese officials apparently became annoyed that the animated feature was massively outperforming Chinese-made animated competitors at the box office. Seven weeks into its run, The Croods – about a caveman’s family trek – was raking in $62 million, but three other Chinese-produced animated features [Happy Little Submarine 3, Rainbow Treasure and The Adventures of Sinbad 2013 and Kuiba 2] only brought in $17 million amongst them. That led the Chinese government to issue a directive to theater owners to pull The Croods early from their run to prevent further box-office embarrassment.
