Discovery Communications and toymaker Hasbro will team up to launch a new kids network and website, the companies announced today.
The new network, which is expected to launch in late 2010, will draw on Discovery content, such as Tutenstein and Peep and the Big Wide World, and debut new live-action and animated programming based on such Hasbro properties as Romper Room, Transformers, Tonka, My Little Pony, G. I. Joe, The Game of Life, Trivial Pursuit, Cranium, and Scrabble. Hasbro will also invest in a new creative team to produce new content, including game shows.
Under terms of the joint venture Hasbro will purchase a fifty-percent stake in Discovery Kids Network and related assets for $300 million. The joint venture will also acquire a minority interest in the U.S. version of Hasbro.com.
No management team has been announced for the new venture, which will continue to operate under the Discovery Kids name until the debut of the new channel.
