Creating Our Own Reboot: Marvel's 52

Postby Grayson » Thu Aug 18, 2011 12:12 am

The DCnU is now 2 weeks away and I have been thinking about what this reboot would be like if it were to have happened in the Marvel Universe. What comics would/wouldn't be totally rebooted? Which characters would be featured, which ones would be forgotten? What creators would be involved? So now I ask my fellow posters at The Outhouse, can we make a relaunch for the Marvel universe that people would be interested in reading?

The challenge is simple and everyone is invited to participate. We will take turns suggesting one of the 52 new titles that will make up the NuMarvel Universe but there will be a few rules and requirements for each suggestion:

1.) Obviously, you will have to tell us the name of your book. Along with the book's title, you need to tell us who the creative team is, the main and supporting cast, and a summary of what your book will be about.

2.) As I said, everybody is invited to participate but in order to insure that we get the widest variety of titles and opinions, you may only make ONE selection every 12 hours. We will go until all 52 titles have been selected and we will end at 52. Make sure that you number your selection, so we know how many more titles need to be selected.

3.) Once all 52 titles have been chosen, that's it. We will then be able to see what titles were passed up and which characters were forgotten.

4.) Any titles that do not meet these rules will be added to our rumored column until the person who suggested them can make them fit in with the rules.

The main thing is simply to have fun! I am going to post the first book which will serve as the NuMarvel's cornerstone book and afterwards this will be open to everyone!

1.) Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes
Written by Ed Brubaker
Art by Olivier Coipel

Cast: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Spider-Man, Giant Man, The Wasp, Hawkeye, The Black Panther, Ms. Marvel

Summary: Superheroes have been operating on Earth for several years now, whether they have been operating in secret or out in the open. However, these high profile individuals haven't had any reason to interact with each other. That all changes when Loki invades Midgard with an army of Asgardian warriors, outfitted with technology provided by Baron Zemo. Earth's heroes desperately attempt to stop the invasion but they can't put aside their differences and egos long enough to work together. Just as all hope seems lost, a symbol from the past emerges but can even Captain American assemble Earth's Mightiest Heroes?

I kinda of envisioned this as a first come, first serve sort of deal. That way, we don't get some idealistic version of this proposed "NuMarvel." It sort of plays out like the DCnU did. If you have any suggestions for somebody's proposed comic, please feel free to share it and that person can decide whether or not to incorporate the idea into their pitch.

Fine with me, just give us a creative team, what cast you envision, and a brief summary of what your version of Cloak and Dagger would be about.

3. X-Statix
Writer: Joe Kelly
Artwork: Adrian Alphona

As superhero teams, especially mutant ones including the likes of the X-Men, gain more media attention, one band of mutants decides to take advantage of all this newfound coverage. But why? To promote peaceful mutant-human relations? Nope. To inspire more mutants to use their powers for the greater good? Nope. To get rich and fulfill their own selfish interests? Yep! Brought together by an MTV producer to create a hit reality TV show highlighting the reallife adventures of a group of mutant superheroes, X-Statix are one of the most oddball supergroups ever assembled. Infights and drama fill their timeslots (and their pages) just as much as fights with baddies, and their stuck-up, wanna-be-rich roster includes:

- Pansy turned leader Mr. Sensitive, a purple-skinned orphan who receives no support from any of the teammembers that he is supposed to lead,
- El Guapo, a young superskater who hopes that being on the show will spike his popularity and help launch his desired career as the mutant Tony Hawk,
- Phat, a chubby gay internet porn star who can also alter his body to perform in twink scenes,
- His furry lover Vivisector, a poor man's purple Hank McCoy, and the only half-sane member of the group. He serves as a voice of reason against obnoxious teammembers such as
- Princess Diana, a former British royalty who was outraged when her return from the dead brought nothing but 15 minutes of briefly renewed fame,
- Dead Girl, the necrophiliac’s wet dream clad with little but skull attire upon her rotting flesh, and who leaves the team after a violent serious of catfights with Diana and is determined to earn a spot amongst the Avengers,
- and Doop, the lovable silent green mascot of America's new favorite reality TV show!

Can these crude and crass mutants get their acts together in time to stop some actual supervillains? Or will they kill each other before even getting this month’s paychecks?

6) Strange Tales

Paul Cornell/Leonard Kirk (the team behind Captain Britain & MI:13)

Starring: Werewolf By Night, Doctor Voodoo, Ulysses and Elisa Bloodstone, Blade, Hellstrom (rotating)

It's more of an anthology series. It might focus on Werewolf By Night for a few issues doing his Bill Bixby/Incredible Hulk/The Fugitive thing for one arc, and then over to Blade fighting vamps in New York or Damian Hellstrom and his deal with the devil or Doctor Voodoo. Maybe there's a WWII era story with Ulysses Bloodstone (as the MU's Indiana Jones) or a Crusades era story with a Black Knight predecessor. Because of the nature of this book and everything, characters could be killed off and stay dead. Or they could meet and go their separate ways. They don't have to be buddy-buddy with everybody they come across. The lack of a "main character" could mean that anyone who appears is fair game. Or maybe they're killed and possessed. But eventually some of them would start working together, even if they're not quite a "team"...

And, of course, it's all building towards something.

7. Amazing Spider-Man
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Andrea DiVito

Why have Cobra and the other 17 members of the Serpent Squad targeted Spider-Man? Does it have anything to do with the rumored Serpent Crown that is up for auction by The Owl? Why are people so intent in disturbing the grave of Peter's Aunt May? And what does Peter Parker's girlfriend Jessica Drew have to do with any of this?

Find out the answers to these questions twice a month from Marvel, the greatest comic company in the universe!

The Initiative
Writers: Rotating team of writers including Christos Gage, Fred Van Lente and others
Artists: Various

From the embers of the Avengers Initiative, heroes were forged and enemies created. What gives someone the initiative to put on a costume and do good or bad? Focusing on the guys who don't get all the glory, Initiative is the place for B, C, and D list heroes and villains get the spotlight. Each issue will feature two stories, one on a "good" guy or team and the other on a "bad" guy or team. Stories can be done in half, small arcs or some crossing over stories. Marvel has thousands of characters, this is a place to see the lesser known guys shine. Many of these issues will have Marvel Handbook style entries for the characters involved.

Well, the above Uncanny idea takes away my premise.

My book would be Wolverine: Weapon X

Writer: Christ Yost
Artist: Barry Windsor Smith

Story: Mutants are feared and hated and hunted. And the greatest of these hunters is the Wolverine. Part of the black bag project known as Weapon X, Wolverine hunts mutants for the government, "retiring" them before they can ever pose a threat to society. WIth other members such as Deadpool, Sabretooth, Maverick, Wraith, and Phantomex, mutants will never have a chance to usurp humanity. And now with other non-mutant superheroes emerging, the Weapon X program gears up for a war against all costumed heroes. But is Wolverine having second thoughts about his role, and how will the mission to take down the X-men and a certain red-headed psychic change things forever?
