As we all eagerly await the fourth installment of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, and the return of Johnny Depp morphing into Captain Jack Sparrow, Pop Tarts has learned that Depp was actually not the person originally planned to play the odd pirate.

“I initially wrote that character with Hugh Jackman in mind,” screenwriter Stuart Beattie told Pop Tarts at the Advance Lounge Chair series in Los Angeles. “Hence the name Captain JACK Sparrow.”

At the time, Jackman was a prominent actor in Beattie’s homeland of Australia, but was not yet a big on the international scene, prompting the folks at Disney to dismiss Beattie’s casting contribution and instead hunt down Johnny Depp for the role.

And when it comes to trying to pushing for a big break in Hollywood, patience certainly pays off.

“I spent ten years pitching it Disney and they weren’t interested,” Beattie, who went on to write a string of other big-budget, epic films such as “Collateral,” “G.I Joe: Rise of the Cobra,” Australia” and “30 Days of Night,” added. “Then finally, I got a call to come back in.”

I like Hugh Jackman, but he would have been too prim & proper (and clean) to be Jack Sparrow.

I'm so excited for another PotC movie. :smt026

How does a guy write great films like PoTC and Collateral and then go and write a stinker like GI Joe: Rise of Cobra?

Whats really funny is that Disney, after seeing the dailies, freaked out about Jacks percived gayness. Depp didnt help when he told them, as a joke, "Dont you know that all my characters are gay." Guess all that money they raked in made them not care anymore. :-D

I believe he took a pre-existing script and worked off of it as they needed to get everything finalized before the writer's strike. Much of what was in the movie was rumored for a couple of years before Beattie and Sommers got attached to the final product.

They expected, and Jackman im sure would have played it, as a normal adventurous character.

they didnt get the mannerisms, the voice, and what not  they thought he had ruined the movie

instead, he made it.

You read the article and then asked that question. So I'd have to say yes.

well obviously in this case. I was talking about more in general. It seems like the guy was like "DUH, he was named JACK because JACKMAN was gonna play him!" kinda dumb.

I loved it when Depp told Patti Smith that story in Vanity Fair. (The rest of the story is that it was just one female executive at Disney who freaked out.) Totally awesome. :-D
