They've done Doctor crossovers between regenerations before. He is a time traveler, after all. There's no reason at all to actually force the on-screen regeneration of the Tennant Doctor. It's entirely possible, although without precedent in the franchise, to see a different version of the Doctor without writing out the prior incarnation.
