15 lbs ago he could just look down, now it's just an unsubstantiated rumor.

Or do you mean Johnston is right at this very minute fellating the new Who?

He is amazing. Loved him in The Thick of It, as well as the ones you mentioned.

Hurt doesn't count. We've known this since the last episode. The Doctor said he didn't act in the name of the Doctor. He was struck from the history books, so to speak.

shouldn't matter, he regenerates only a finite amount of times... struck from the history books or not, there is still a regeneration that occurs.

But the Doctor does not have to acknowledge him. He did not take on the name of the Doctor. And the finite regenerations thing could play a factor within the story, but this is still the 12th Doctor because Hurt never took on the name. Also, the finite regens is easily bypassable. It has happened before.

Just discovered this.

Peter Capaldi was lead singer of a minor punk band back in the early 80's called the Dreamboys.
The Dreamboys drummer was Craig Ferguson...

if they start cheating, it sullies the whole thing. I am cool with partial regenerations not counting, whole sale is whole sale... not acting in the name of the doctor and not being named the doctor are two different things and like it or not, the SCREEN SAID "AND INTRODUCING JOHN HURT AS THE DOCTOR."

You're arguing pointless things.

The Doctor doesn't go around calling himself the 11th Doctor, or the 10th Doctor or whatever. The numbering is for the fans.

And the BBC is calling it the 12th Doctor, and have shown McGann's picture among the past Doctors. Hurt does not count as a "Doctor".

Hurt is a past regeneration, but one the Doctor doesn't acknowledge anymore. It's not complicated.

I think that the regeneration deal will be addressed sometime over the next 3 years.
They'll have to decide on just how to deal with it, which of course is a rather juicy concept to play with.
Within the continuity there are a couple of possible explanations, such as he was given additional due to the Time War.
Another is River Song's save could have added more. Also, there could be another reason given as a curse as in the classic series, it showed
immortality as a curse. There are other plausible within the continuity answers.

Plus... now we get the Valeyard factor.

Given that we now have an older Doctor again, and note he is one of the oldest to be cast, this could say a good deal about the Xmas special and it's affect on the Doctor.

I still suspect that Hurt's Doctor will have a different name. Not Valryard but perhaps something else.
I got the feeling with Hurt's scene that he was a very important part of the war. Maybe he was The General?
