Shocker?

2nd Godzilla Anime Film to Feature Battle Between Godzilla Earth, Mechagodzilla

The official website for the Godzilla anime film trilogy revealed on Tuesday that Godzilla Earth is the name of the "super gigantic Godzilla" in the first film, Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (Godzilla: Kaijū Wakusei). The website also teased that the second film, titled Godzilla: Kessen Kidō Zōshoku Toshi (Godzilla: The City Mechanized for the Final Battle), will feature a "Godzilla Earth vs. Mechagodzilla" battle.

Godzilla's 1st Anime Film Gets Shonen Jump + Manga in March

A manga adaptation of Godzilla: Planet of the Monsters (Godzilla: Kaijū Wakusei), the first film in the Godzilla anime trilogy, will launch in the Shonen Jump + web magazine and on the Z web site in March. Youth Kurahashi (Summer Hero) is drawing the manga.

The manga will cover story material not in the anime, add original elements, and offer a glimpse into the "surprising past" of the characters.

Spoilers:

These really ARE spoilers for Monster Planet, so...if you don't want it spoiled for you, don't read them. I mean it, don't blame me if you click on those and are spoiled! :x

[Reveal] Spoiler: Click to Expand
Damn the Japanese like bleak stuff. Bleak describes this one. And those size stats mentioned....aren't for the Godzilla they fight through much of the movie, but for the one who heaves himself out of the earth after they kill the first, much smaller one. That's right, TWO Godzillas...at least, and the final one wins, killing everyone save maybe the doomed hero. Still, probably the best Godzilla movie bar KOTM, even if bleak isn't your thing. Even with the help of at least one alien race, probably two, humanity still can't defeat Godzilla, and everyone who goes down to Earth dies.

And now, the part where I criticize the movie, and rip it to shreds! :P

[Reveal] Spoiler: Click to Expand
Only about four of the character have any real characterization to them. Our doomed hero, the probably doomed creepy but good and helpful alien priest, the professor, Deadmeat....and that's about it. I have no idea who the girl was, or what her relationship to our doomed hero was. Just that she was doomed too. So, like so many other movies of this sort, it commits the sin of only offering any characterization to the important characters, (see Bright).

Then there's the problem of their big plan. Last I checked, the Earth has more than one landmass. Why not put down on the place farthest away from the big scary monster? Related to that was how Godzilla managed to drive EVERYONE off the planet, or at least everyone who survived. They established him as moving at around 40 kilometers an hour, and it didn't seem he could do much more than that. Earth's surface area is almost 200 million square miles, or 510 million square kilometers. Beginning to see the problem with suggesting that one monster, no matter how big, could drive everyone away? Most of that is ocean of course, but then people can live on the ocean as well, not to mention in places where giant monsters either can't go, or are unlikely, such as steep, high mountain ranges, swamps and wetlands, dense forests....

And what happened to the other monsters? That's never really settle, though none of the original monsters are seen once the movie moves forward in time. What are the final fates of the main characters? Deadmeat...well, that one was certain. The hero being alive but trapped as he curses Godzilla, the REAL Godzilla, is a trope, so that was understandable. But what happens to the girl, the professor, or the alien priest? None of that is shown, just general destruction of the fleeing humans.

4 out of five stars for me, the best Godzilla movie to date apart from the original. Anime makes it possible to do things the live action movies just can't manage.
