Indeed, it may be Depp's finest performance.

I think it's very likely that Depp was way better than Murray.

I don't think it's wise to go all-in when you're betting against Steve friggin Zissou.

Fuck him. He is a comedy GOD, but he's NOT the Thompson Depp is.

Want Proof?

Did THOMPSON himself appear in Murray's movie, and SHAVE MURRAY'S HEAD personally?

No.

DEPP WINS.

Fear and Loathing was a better movie, no doubt...... but consider that Where The Buffalo Roam was made in 1980......

1980
Bill Murray did as good as could possibly have been done at that time, dirt cheap budget, unknown cast (keep in mind that his stint on SNL hadn't even finished, and this movie came out BEFORE caddyshack)

And his performance was brilliant. In fact beyond the comedy, it showed his acting ability as much as his later film Razors Edge

Check out the preview

And yes, Depp was the better Thompson, he grew up around him, and Depps a superb actor...... but I still really really liked Murrays version, maybe its just a childhood thing, being exposed to an attitude and personality that would take years to fully cement itself in my brain. WTBR remained dormant in my subconscious till I "discovered" the works of the Beat generation after graduation, first with the films Naked Lunch, then by voraciously reading Kerouac, Kesey, Burroughs, Thompson, Leery, Ginsberg.... then the ultimate perfection that was Fear and Loathing......

Then in the continuance of that attitude, in the adventures of Spider Jerusalem tripping mad through the pages of Transmetropolitan.... my favorite piece of fiction of all time.

Soi in many ways, you guys have Murray to thank for who I am today.....

Or you can hate him for it.....
:-D

Hmmm...... with a little more effort this would have made a pretty good column....
