Headsets Not Included with XBox One

Two steps forward, one step back.

Source: arstechnica

Most gamers may be used to getting a basic headset with their console purchase.  Aside from the base model 4GB 360, the majority of 360's came with one.  The Playstation 4 comes with a mono earbud/microphone.  The XBox One however, will not include one, instead offering the Kinect to take it's place.

From Microsoft:

Xbox One does not include a pack-in headset accessory. Each Xbox One includes the new Kinect sensor, with a highly sensitive multi-array microphones designed to enable voice inputs and chat as a system-level capability, both in-game and with Skype and other experiences. For gamers who prefer a headset, we have a variety of offerings that you can find on the Xbox Wire.

Granted, I'm sure that many a gamer would take an XBox One that's $100 cheaper, sans Kinect with a basic headset, but that choice is not yours to make.

The Kinect will allow you to chat with friends, but anyone who has played a multi-player game, especially a shooter, knows how ridiculous it is to have a dozen voices shouting out of your TV in addition to the game sound.

Existing headsets will not work with the XBox One due to changes in the connector.  Turtle Beach however, whose headsets will not be compatible with the XBox One as they exist now, will be selling an adapter.  For players that have spent hundreds of dollars on quality gaming headsets, this is good news.

Perhaps Microsoft will still reconsider some of its policies, as they have with the DRM like features on XBox One.  We are still months away from release and though the changes they've made have won over a few players, many are still looking at the PS4, despite being XBox players for years.

Not surprising. I miss the days when a console came with everything you needed to play it. Now they come with like one controller, no games, and both cost $50 or more. You really need an additional $100-$150 to the console price to get started.

I just want to get into a really busy server and shout XBOX OFF and watch everyone drop.

yeeaaahhh... I'm definately not picking one of these up. Killer Instinct isn't a good enough game to justify putting up with all this bull shit. When Microsoft gets actual GAMING people back on the box, that's when I'll give them my money.

I thought head sets were a reason not to get an x box. I mean who wants a 40 year old Italian from long island screaming racial slurs at you while a 11 year old tells you to do unspeakable things with your dick and ass?

Yes, all the people who weren't going to get an Xbox One in the first place now I have something else to bitch about.

The problem is the microphone for the kenect sucks and will often get confused if you have too many people on Xbox live talking. All those voices go through the TV. Headsets make it so you can hear the other players better and communicate better.

Just read some more info on this. Apparently, adapters for old headsets will allow for sound only and not voice chat, as MS is only allowing that through a special XB1 license. Not sure if the turtle beach adapter will have this or not.
