Well, to keep up with my counterpoint over here, I ordered the first two trades. I hope that makes Mr. S. Djed, Mr. D. Bird and Mr. K. Melon all happy.

Try the B.P.R.D. trades too. :P I'm up to volume five on Hellboy so I"m not that far behind. I've never thought of buying a companion book but you've raised my curiousity.

I finally saw the trailer for Hellboy II and it looks so good. At the start of it I didn't even know what it was for.

Actually, while Hellboy is the Mignola-verse's biggest star, BPRD has offered some of the best stories. Particularly since volume three, with Guy Davis on art. Thats where it became a real ongoing series in its own right. It also does a lot to flesh out the mythology of the two series.

But can you read one wihtout having to read/know the other?

You can read Hellboy without BPRD.

Actually, BPRD doesn't even start until after Hellboy vol 5, I think.

Yes, you can read them separately. Tiny, tiny spoiler: at the end of volume 5, Hellboy leaves the Bureau and it was years before Mignola produced volume 6! During that time Mignola really started to develop the BPRD title -- now starring an ensemble cast that didn't include Hellboy. He doesn't draw BPRD, so he was able to do more work on that while working on other things (movies, cartoons, etc). Its only in the last year or so that he's started doing new Hellboy material, but he and John Arcudi have been writing great BPRD stuff and Davis has been illustrating it.

Exactly.

In fact, I'd suggest reading them in this order:

Hellboy 1-5
BPRD to current
Hellboy 6

There's 10 volumes of Hellboy and 6 volumes of BPRD. My credit card just let out a slight yelp. :?

Edit: Wait there's 8, plus Hellboy Jr. and 2 planned BPRD trades. Still a yelp, but I have to like 1 and 2 before I buy any more. I'm definitely gonna be giving these two thorough reads.

Skip Hellboy jr. It's stupid, and not tied to the core series.

You'll like volume one, Byrne just polished the dialogue and managed not to call anyone a whore.
